The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Mumbai Police has been probing him over allegations linked to the Mithi River desilting scandal. As reported by The Times of India, this high-profile case revolves around the questionable use of approximately 65.54 crores, funds earmarked for revitalizing, cleaning, and maintaining the life-giving Mithi River in Mumbai before the monsoons set in. Besides Dino, Santino Rocco Morea, his younger brother, is also under investigation. This was confirmed by Sangramsing Nishandar, deputy commissioner of police at EOW, who stated to Hindustan Times, “We have been interrogating the Morea brothers since 11 am.

A related officer mentioned that the brothers became noticeable to authorities when police discovered mobile phone records suggesting they had communicated with individuals connected to the ongoing investigation.

On May 6, 2025, the Economic Offences Wing brought charges against 13 individuals, among them being three city officials. The brothers Morea were questioned as part of this case due to their involvement. These officials are alleged to have caused a financial loss of approximately Rs 65.54 crore to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in relation to a significant and crucial project.

About the Mithi River desilting scam

The fraud was exposed as the BMC asserted that certain locations had not been properly cleared of sediment and waste. Additionally, they stated that excessive fees were levied for this service, and no inspection or review of the desilting process was conducted.

Additionally, contractors Ketan Kadam and Jayesh Joshi, based in Mumbai, are accused of inflating costs when purchasing machinery from Matprop Technical Services Pvt. Ltd., located in Kochi. They have been apprehended by authorities. The Dino brothers’ suspected role is currently under investigation by a specialized unit of the Mumbai Police.
