As a seasoned gamer who has traversed countless virtual worlds and artistic landscapes, I must say that the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan, Wisconsin is a beacon of inspiration for creators across all realms. Having spent years immersed in digital environments, it’s refreshing to see such an innovative hub that bridges the gap between contemporary artists and industrial artisans.
To celebrate the 50th year of its yearly artist residency, the John Michael Kohler Arts Center emphasizes the collaboration between modern artists and skilled craftsmen in industrial fields. In conjunction with international manufacturing corporation Kohler, this series of group exhibitions, individual shows, and community events highlights shared knowledge by merging art and industry through a blend of influences.
Established in 1974 by two Kohler siblings in the tranquil freshwater town of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, the Arts Center has evolved into a dynamic platform for artists from various creative disciplines. Annually, the program invites 12 artists to immerse themselves in extensive production work for a period of three months. Delving into diverse mediums such as ceramics, cast iron, brass, pottery, and foundry, they encourage the advancement of skill through the use of industrial materials, technology, and collaborative exploration.
This year’s “Work in Progress” theme highlights the elegance of hands-on work. Over the past fifty years, the Arts/Industry program has amassed a network of more than 500 alumni, which includes artists such as Willie Cole, Woody De Othello, Ann Agee, Edra Soto and Tomas Vu. By fostering an exchange of creative ideas between artists and artisans, they inspire each other to new artistic and design heights, while exploring the innovative possibilities offered by industry.
50th anniversary celebrations for the Arts/Industry Residency Program are currently being showcased in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, from now until April 2025. For further details about these exhibitions or the residency program itself, please visit the John Michael Kohler Arts Center’s website.
