As a seasoned gamer and cinephile who has seen his fair share of box office hits and misses, I can’t help but feel a tinge of disappointment when yet another promising superhero film underperforms at the box office. The case of “Kraven the Hunter” is no exception.
As a diehard fan, I must admit that I was quite disappointed to see that the debut of “Kraven the Hunter,” Sony Pictures’ Marvel spin-off featuring Aaron Taylor- Johnson, didn’t make much of a splash at the box office during its opening weekend.
In a disappointing turn, Taylor-Johnson starred as Spider-Man’s arch-nemesis in the main role, but the movie only managed to earn $11 million USD during its opening weekend, significantly falling short of predictions. This lackluster performance has earned the film the unwanted title of having the poorest debut for any Sony-Marvel production. Interestingly, earlier this year, Madame Web brought in $15.3 million USD. Similarly, Kraven the Hunter received some of the franchise’s lowest ratings ever from critics and audiences, scoring a 15% on Rotten Tomatoes and a “C” grade on CinemaScore.
This year, Sony’s third movie based on characters related to Spider-Man was “Venom: The Last Dance,” which hit theaters in October with Tom Hardy in the lead role. Despite being commercially successful, it didn’t meet the high expectations set for it. The series’ struggles started with Jared Leto’s “Morbius” from 2022. Due to delays with “Kraven,” production costs climbed to over $110 million USD. This film was released alongside Warner Bros.’ anime fantasy film “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim,” as well as sequels for “Moana,” “Wicked,” and “Gladiator.
