In simpler terms, the film “Kraven the Hunter,” Sony’s effort to launch a new Spider-Man-related movie series, might have sealed the fate of their brief cinematic universe instead. Featuring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, this movie didn’t win over critics or audiences and performed poorly at the box office. Interestingly enough, “Kraven” isn’t even the poorest Marvel film they’ve released lately when you consider recent memory.
Starting on January 14th, Kraven the Hunter is set to make its digital debut, available for rent or purchase on PVOD. However, it remains unclear when this film will be added to a streaming service. Given that Netflix currently hosts Madame Web, they could potentially be the platform for Kraven’s streaming release. Regardless, it’s not surprising that the movie is hitting digital platforms just a month after its theatrical premiere. Despite earning $58 million globally, the film fell far short of its reported $110 million budget. On Rotten Tomatoes, critics panned the film with a 17% rotten rating, while audiences gave it a more favorable 74% on the Popcornmeter.
The captivating, adult-oriented film titled “Kraven the Hunter” delves into the origin story of one of Marvel’s most renowned adversaries. In this movie, Aaron Taylor-Johnson portrays Kraven, a character whose turbulent bond with his ruthless criminal father, Nikolai Kravinoff (Russell Crowe), propels him on a vengeful journey that leads to catastrophic outcomes. This journey eventually transforms him into the world’s greatest hunter and one of its most feared figures.
Is ‘Kraven the Hunter’ the Last Sony Spider-Man Universe Movie?
Before it even had a chance to hit the big screen, Kraven the Hunter was struggling to stay afloat due to Sony’s decision to put their Spider-Man Universe on hold indefinitely. With box office predictions for the film being historically low, it was reported that the studio decided it was best to halt the cinematic universe before it continued to fall apart. The only successful franchise that stemmed from this short-lived effort is Tom Hardy’s Venom trilogy, which concluded late last year. As for Madame Web and Morbius, less attention should be paid to them.
Sony has shifted the responsibility for their Spider-Man Universe’s failures onto others, according to their own statements. As stated by Tony Vinciquerra, CEO of Sony Pictures, negative publicity and poor critical reviews were primarily responsible for the disappointing performance of movies like ‘Kraven’ and ‘Madame Web.’ This isn’t because the films are generally considered terrible, but rather due to the impact of unfavorable press and reviews.
Let me briefly discuss Madame Web. Despite its strong performance on Netflix, it didn’t fare well in theaters due to negative reviews from the press. However, the movie wasn’t actually poor; it was just unfairly criticized. The same thing happened with Kraven and Madame Web, as well as Venom – although audiences adored Venom, making it a box office sensation. It seems that critics have been unkind to these films for some reason.
