‘Kraven the Hunter’ Set to Open With Record-Breaking Low Box Office Haul

As a seasoned movie critic with over three decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Sony Pictures’ latest move with “Kraven the Hunter” is as predictable as a Michael Bay Transformers sequel. It seems like they’re on a never-ending quest to turn gold into lead, much like King Midas, but in this case, it’s box office gold we’re talking about.

It appears that Sony Pictures has been criticized by disgruntled fans for damaging several popular franchises in the past due to their handling of certain intellectual properties. Recently, it seems that another questionable choice has been made, which has further diminished the film’s earning potential at the box office. Originally projected to earn between $20-25 million this weekend, the movie is now expected to take in approximately $13-15 million instead.

On the very same day, Sony announced that they’ve paused their Spider-Man series indefinitely following the release of “Kraven the Hunter,” as it seems the poor reception and financial performance of most films except for “Venom” had already hinted at this move. The decision to make this announcement so close to the release date of Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s R-rated movie, however, raises some eyebrows, as it may influence potential viewers to reconsider spending their time and resources on that film.

After seeing Morbius and Madame Web bomb at the box office, later finding some success on Netflix, it appears that the same destiny may await Kraven the Hunter. Initial online feedback hasn’t been particularly favorable, and even enthusiastic statements from the cast and crew about how Kraven will surpass Sony’s recent disappointing Marvel films seem unlikely to change much.

Sony’s Spider-Man Universe Has Failed to Capture an Audience

It appears that Kraven the Hunter will likely have the lowest debut out of all Sony’s franchises following the underwhelming box office performances of Madame Web ($15.3 million) and Morbius ($39 million). This could be reminiscent of the downfall of the DCEU, which at least saw a strong showing from Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom around this same time last year, despite its struggles overall. The Spider-Man universe, which once hinted at the presence of Spider-Man but fell short in delivering, has unfortunately delivered a series of disappointments instead.

The Last Dance, introduced a new character named Knull, setting up potential future developments for the franchise. However, the plans surrounding Knull’s role, which were suggested to be significant, are now uncertain.

At present, Sony’s joint project with Marvel Studios on “Spider-Man 4” is moving forward. The plot is said to focus on Tom Holland’s character Peter Parker, who seems to be giving up his ordinary life entirely in favor of fully embracing his Spider-Man identity. Despite numerous speculations about the arrival of Venom in the MCU, no concrete details have been disclosed yet regarding who Spiderman will battle or how the storyline will align with Marvel Studios’ larger narrative schemes.
