Kurt Sutter Exits His Netflix Western ‘The Abandons’

As a devoted fan who has followed Kurt Sutter‘s career closely, it’s always a rollercoaster ride! From “Sons of Anarchy” to “The Shield,” and now “The Abandons,” Sutter’s storytelling has been nothing short of captivating. The latest news about his departure from “The Abandons” is yet another twist in this intriguing tale.

Netflix and creator Kurt Sutter have parted ways on the streamer’s western The Abandons.

Sutter, the mastermind behind the show, departed due to creative disputes with Netflix. The series The Abandons, which takes place in the Oregon Territory during the 1850s, still has a few weeks left for filming its season and will carry on shooting in Calgary, Alberta.

Netflix declined comment.

In October 2022, Netflix commissioned “The Abandons” directly for a series. This series, featuring Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson in the lead roles, revolves around a band of unconventional families living in Oregon during the 1850s who unite to combat a corrupt, wealthy elite determined to drive them off their land. The ensemble also includes Nick Robinson, Diana Silvers, Lamar Johnson, Natalia del Riego, Lucas Till, Aisling Franciosi, Toby Hemingway, Michael Greyeyes, Ryan Hurst, Katelyn Wells, Clayton Cardenas, Elle-Maija Tailfeathers, Brían F. O’Byrne, Marc Menchaca, Patton Oswalt, Michael Ornstein, Jonathan Koensgen, Jack Doolan, Michiel Huisman, Haig Sutherland, and Sarah White.

Approximately three years after Kurt Sutter was dismissed from ‘Mayans MC’ on FX due to his “abrasive” behavior on set, as he himself described it, the Netflix series was released. According to reports from The Hollywood Reporter at that time, there had been numerous complaints about his conduct during the show. Elgin James, a co-creator, stepped in as showrunner for the remainder of ‘Mayans MC’s’ run, which spanned five seasons and 50 episodes on FX.

Reports indicate that Sutter left The Abandons following Netflix’s review of early cuts of the show’s initial episodes. These previews ran almost as long as a full-length movie, eventually divided into two episodes due to content requirements, thus necessitating extra scenes. Executive producer and director Otto Bathurst, along with co-EP Rob Askins, will now supervise the rest of the filming.

Deadline first reported the news.
