Throughout last Wednesday, multiple wildfires raged destructively in Los Angeles, prompting several organizations to launch relief initiatives. These initiatives aimed at supporting both emergency responders and individuals from the entertainment industry affected by this calamitous natural event.
The ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles County, specifically the Palisades fire, Eaton fire, Hurst fire, and Woodley fire (as seen in these photos), are currently not contained and have resulted in over 30,000 evacuations and at least two fatalities.
Here are some of the organizations collecting donations and offering help:
As a passionate gamer, I’m stepping up to help out during these tough times. I’m rallying my fellow gamers and everyone else who cares to join, to support Defy:Disaster – an initiative by the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF). This program is collecting donations from the entertainment world and public at large, to aid firefighters, first responders, and communities hit hard by fires.
The EIF, established back in 1942, has a rich history of disaster response. After the devastating Camp and Woolsey Fires in 2018, they channeled over $2 million to firefighters across California, along with organizations offering long-term aid to survivors. In a statement, EIF President and CEO Nicole Sexton expressed her sympathy, saying, “Our hearts go out to those who’ve lost their homes and those unsure of what the future holds.” She emphasized the urgent need for shelter, food, water, medical care, and pet care for those displaced.
In 2023, Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne Johnson launched People’s Fund of Maui, managed by EIF. This fund provided vital support to residents who lost their homes in the fires in Lahaina and Kula, distributing $60 million to affected bank accounts within six months.
So, let’s unite, game on, and make a difference together!
The Screen Actors Guild (SAG), who postponed their live, in-person declaration of SAG Awards nominations on Wednesday because of the fires, is inviting donations to the SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s disaster relief fund for natural catastrophes. This move aims to support the SAG-AFTRA community during this difficult time.
GoFundMe has set up a thriving center for its verified pages concerning the expanding local wildfires. One fundraising campaign aims to aid the non-profit canine rescue organization, Rags2Wags. As stated on the page, “The Palisades fire has necessitated an evacuation of the rescue.” Moving each dog to a secure and fitting location is proving challenging and costly.” Other campaigns depict losing homes and possessions in stark, personal terms. “The fire destroyed everything,” one organizer says, describing her mother’s predicament.
More to come.
