During the lively filming of “La Dolce Villa“, director Mark Waters (known for “Mean Girls”) found himself needing to request a bit more silence from his enthusiastic cast members, Scott Foley (“Scandal”) and Maia Reficco (“Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin”), who portray a father-daughter duo in this touching Netflix original comedy. The two actors got along so well on set that they had difficulty toning down their conversations and laughter. As Foley humorously pointed out in a recent interview with MovieWeb, “We’re not being unprofessional, but I just wanted to clarify that right now.
Building a connection with your work partners is crucial since every relationship varies. In my role as her ‘father figure’, I believed establishing a private code or shared humor was essential. We swiftly found ourselves engaging in off-color banter that often made us chuckle, and though we were occasionally reprimanded for it, I think our antics added an entertaining touch to the movie, giving it a more lively feel.
It seems that the approach taken by Foley and Reficco has been successful. After all, “La Dolce Villa” is a delight for viewers. The plot revolves around a harried businessman (Foley), who journeys to Italy to prevent his spirited daughter (Reficco) from renovating a dilapidated villa. However, Italy’s charm proves irresistible, and soon there are subtle indications of romance, breathtaking landscapes, and an enchanting atmosphere surrounding them. The film also features Violante Placido and Giuseppe Futia in prominent roles.
‘La Dolce Villa’ Is Really About Taking Chances
It’s clear why Foley and Reficco became friends – they are both charming actors who have been captivating audiences for quite some time now. Foley has left an impression on shows such as Felicity (as Noah Crane), The Unit (as Bob), and Scandal (as Jake Ballard). Meanwhile, Reficco is riding high after a successful stint in Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin and currently stars as Eurydice in Broadway’s Hadestown.
Filmed in Rome, Tuscany, and other picturesque spots across Italy, the movie bears resemblance to “Under the Tuscan Sun,” with Diane Lane in the lead role. In this story, father Eric and his daughter Olivia, who lost their wife/mother respectively, grapple with their differences. Despite Eric’s best efforts to dissuade her from a real estate deal offering a villa for mere $1, Olivia goes ahead with the purchase. The film is as much about seizing opportunities as it is about navigating loss.
As repairs are being made, Olivia takes time to reflect on her life choices, while Eric forms connections with the mayor, Francesca (Violante Placido) and some of the local residents. Foley, enamored by filming in Italy, is said to have expressed a desire to live there permanently. You can often find him laughing at a nearby café.
