Laapataa Ladies’ Chhaya Kadam says ‘I felt like I was born’ when she joined Bollywood; shares how industry taught her not to discriminate

Chhaya Kadam has been connected with the Indian film industry for many years now. A well-known figure in the Marathi entertainment world, she found recognition in Bollywood following her work in Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies. Lately, she spoke candidly about the experience of joining the industry and how it taught her not to judge others unfairly. Keep reading for more!

Starting out in Marathi theater, appearing in Marathi films and small roles in Hindi movies, Chhaya Kadam eventually took the spotlight in the critically acclaimed film Laapataa Ladies. In a chat with Filmfare, this actress shared that her entry into the entertainment world felt like a new beginning or reincarnation.

Chhaya expressed in Marathi that entering this profession made her feel reborn, as prior to that she was quite conventional. Originally from Konkan, Maharashtra, and raised in a housing complex, she didn’t encounter caste-based discrimination as something wrong. However, upon joining the film industry, her viewpoint shifted, and she understood that there is no significance in one’s caste, as people are simply people.

People may have unique differences and diverse beliefs, but they can coexist harmoniously like sharing an umbrella. Over time, she also understood that everyone relies on each other in some way. Whether a person is perceived as good or bad, if they wish to collaborate on a project, they must set aside their differences and find solutions together – which she learned from the industry.

Initially, she didn’t mind strangers sitting outside her home or having separate cups for household workers. However, these practices became bothersome to her once she joined the industry. At this point, she began focusing on personal growth, which proved incredibly beneficial for her.

For those unaware, Chhaya Kadam has previously appeared in films such as Singham Returns, Andhadhun, Antim: The Final Truth, Gangubai Kathiawadi, Jhund, and Safed. Later on, she took on the significant role of Manju Mai in Laapataa Ladies.
