Lady Gaga Recalls How Working On Joker 2 Impacted Her Home Life With Her Fiancé

As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast with a soft spot for the DC Universe, I must say I’m eagerly anticipating Lady Gaga‘s portrayal of Harley Quinn in “Joker: Folie à Deux.” The intriguing blend of music, acting, and iconic characters has always been a captivating combination.

In a matter of days, audiences will witness a fresh interpretation of Harley Quinn by a new actress in a live-action film, following Margot Robbie’s portrayal of the character within the DC Extended Universe. Lady Gaga is bringing a unique take on Harley for the upcoming DC film “Joker: Folie à Deux,” commonly referred to as “Joker 2.” This sequel to the first “Joker” movie takes place two years after the original storyline, and Gaga’s performance in this adaptation of the DC Comics story has already garnered positive attention for her work alongside Joaquin Phoenix. However, Gaga shared that embodying the role had an influence on her personal life with her partner, Michael Polansky.

Lady Gaga delved into this topic during an interview, sharing how the film served as the catalyst for her latest album titled “Harlequin.” This record features reworked covers that she and Phoenix sing in Joker, along with two fresh compositions. Known for her roles in films such as “A Star is Born” and “House of Gucci,” Gaga initiated the discussion with Entertainment Weekly by saying:

In the process of crafting this character for my film, she left an indelible impact upon me. During movie production, both myself and Michael grew quite familiar with her personality, which ultimately led us to collaborate on this unique project.

As a gamer diving into the world of Joker 2, I’ve been excitedly anticipating Lady Gaga’s portrayal of Harley Quinn, or Lee as she’ll be known in this movie. The first trailer and subsequent previews have given us a tantalizing glimpse, but it’s always fascinating to learn about the behind-the-scenes process that brings characters to life. It seems Lady Gaga has poured her heart and soul into embodying Lee, such that even Michael Polansky, who wasn’t on the Joker 2 set, felt a connection to the character. This connection eventually led to the creation of Harlequin. Furthermore, Gaga shared that her interpretation of Harley Quinn is designed to champion “complex female characters,” emphasizing the importance of such roles in storytelling.

In an attempt to pay tribute to a character who embodies a delicate balance between peril and charm, and resists conventional definition, we aimed to create something for this album that mirrors that enigma. Just as Lee’s character defies categorization in the movie, so does the music in this album, refusing to be pigeonholed by genre.

If you’re a fan of Lady Gaga’s music and eagerly waiting for the release of ‘Harlequin’, remember to acknowledge Michael Polansky as well. Gaga herself has acknowledged his “extraordinary creativity” and stated that he is artistically closer to her than most people in her life. It appears that without Polansky’s contributions, the album ‘Harlequin’ might not have been possible.

Instead of being the psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum like in previous portrayals, Lady Gaga’s interpretation of Harley Quinn is a fellow patient at Arkham, sharing the asylum with Joaquin Phoenix’s character Arthur Fleck. Upon encountering Arthur, Lee develops an obsessive interest in him, which eventually leads to the complex romantic relationship that has been frequently portrayed in media for over three decades. The cast of Joker 2 includes Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beetz, Steve Coogan and Harry Lawtey, among others.
