Lady Gaga Says Her Take on Harley Quinn Came From Her “Experience With Mania and Chaos Inside”

As a gamer who’s been through my fair share of emotional rollercoasters in virtual worlds and real life alike, I find Lady Gaga’s portrayal of Harley Quinn in “Joker: Folie à Deux” incredibly captivating. Her ability to draw upon her personal experiences, particularly her battle with mania and chaos, to bring depth and authenticity to the character is truly commendable. It’s like she’s not just playing a role, but living it, much like we do when we immerse ourselves in our favorite video games.

Lady Gaga opens up about her perspective on Harley Quinn and how her own life experiences influenced her portrayal of the well-known comic book character in the upcoming movie “Joker: Madness for Two

The award-winning musician recently chatted with Vogue for their October cover issue, prior to the premiere of Todd Phillips’ new movie where she co-stars alongside Joaquin Phoenix as Joker/Arthur Fleck. In this interview, she shared that her performance in the role was deeply personal

“Harley Quinn is a figure well-known in popular culture,” she said to the press. “For me, crafting her was unique, as it allowed me to express my own struggles with mania and chaos – these turbulent emotions actually bring about a sense of stillness for me. Often, women are stereotyped as overly emotional beings, and when we’re overwhelmed, we’re seen as erratic or unbalanced. Yet I ponder if, when life pushes us to the brink and reality becomes shattered, it might instead lead to… quiet introspection?”

She went on to explain, “I based my work on a ‘feel memory’ approach: What is it like to move through the world while being firmly supported and intensely held? Also, what occurs when you conceal all the intricate details hidden just below the surface?”

The Oscar winner also opened up about her relationship with fiancé Michael Polansky, with whom she attended the Venice Film Festival earlier this week for the Joker: Folie à Deux world premiere. She revealed her mom met him first and was pretty sure her daughter would marry him one day.

Gaga reminisced about the initial stages of their partnership, which commenced just prior to the onset of COVID-19, resulting in a nationwide lockdown. For more than a year, they endured quarantine together during the pandemic, an experience she considered “particularly unique.” It afforded her the opportunity to pause her career and devote herself entirely to her relationship

“I was truly heartbroken witnessing the devastating impact of the pandemic on our world,” I admitted. “It wasn’t just about the illness and the loss of life, but also the loneliness it brought upon so many. I feel incredibly blessed to have not been one of them. Enter Michael, a man unlike any other I’ve met – sharp-witted, compassionate, and seemingly worlds apart from me. Yet, we’re kindred spirits, bound together not by circumstance but by the simple truth that we are right for each other.”

She shared that it’s important for her fans to understand her current state of joy and wellbeing, as the last update they received was during the launch of Chromatica, a period she described as incredibly difficult for her

“I found myself in a tough spot for quite some time, but things began to shift when a genuine friend stepped into my life,” I shared. “He recognized the sources of my distress and wasn’t afraid to walk with me through it all, delving deeply into understanding who I truly am.”

Apart from “Joker: Folie à Deux”, Lady Gaga recently teamed up with Bruno Mars on a track titled “Die With a Smile”. Her upcoming album, currently known as LG7, is due for release in its entirety in February. However, she has hinted that a single off this pop record will be released in October beforehand. Additionally, Gaga is secretly working on another music project

Furthermore in her profile, Lady Gaga acknowledged and commended several contemporary musicians and songwriters, specifically Taylor Swift, Charli XCX, Chappell Roan, Billie Eilish, and Kesha, for their current contributions to the music industry

She expressed her deep affection for them, saying, “I adore them so much that I get emotional online. I watch every bit of it and find myself thinking, ‘Keep going!’ My support isn’t just verbal; my heart is with them in this journey. I want them to feel joyful and content.”

Joker: Folie à Deux is set to hit theaters on Oct. 4.
