Lainie Miller, known for her captivating burlesque performance in the film The Graduate, subsequently working as a script supervisor, business agent, and producer, passed away at the age of 84.
Miller passed away on Tuesday at her residence in Toluca Lake, Los Angeles, following a long struggle against metastatic cancer. This information was shared by a family representative with The Hollywood Reporter.
Dick Miller, the acclaimed character actor who starred in numerous films directed by Roger Corman and Joe Dante, such as “A Bucket of Blood” and “Gremlins”, passed away in January 2019 at the age of 90. He had been married for almost six decades.
Sheila Elaine was born on March 7, 1941, in Ontario, Canada. To aid her recovery from polio that confined her to an iron lung from the age of 3 to 5, she started dancing at a young age.
For thirteen years, she honed her skills in contortion and ballet. At one point, she graced the stage of Toronto’s Royal Alexandra Theatre, which is North America’s oldest continuously operating theater, in Swan Lake. Prior to relocating to Hollywood at age 17, she had also acted in weekly radio dramas on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) from a young age.
After becoming a Las Vegas showgirl and headlining with Minsky’s Revue, she leveraged her background to portray a stripper in an impactful scene that embarrasses Katharine Ross’ character Elaine Robinson in Mike Nichols’ film, The Graduate (1967).
In 1966, Barbara Ann’s mother, Miller, decided to switch careers and pursue nursing, as it offered more stability for her daughter. She used the money from her acting roles at Paramount to finance her education. When asked about this decision, she humorously commented, “I felt like I needed to start challenging my mind a bit – a change was in order. My brain had grown a bit idle.
Before transitioning back to the film industry in the 1980s, Miller had held notable roles such as director of nurses, associate hospital administrator, and chief labor negotiator. In Hollywood, she worked as an IATSE 871 script supervisor, contributing to various projects including the syndicated series “Freddy’s Nightmares” (1988-90) and the film “Down Periscope” (1996). Additionally, she served as a business agent for over a decade.
As a gamer, I’ve worn multiple hats too, diving into different roles with MPI Pension and Health, IATSE, and even serving as a labor delegate. Additionally, I had the privilege to co-executive produce the 2009 Little League movie, “The Perfect Game,” directed by William Dear and featuring Clifton Collins Jr. And yes, you might have spotted me in a few acting roles here and there as well.
Miller first encountered her future spouse at Schwab’s Pharmacy in Hollywood, identifying him behind the drugstore counter from the film “War of the Satellites” (1958) directed by Corman. She casually commented, “He could leave his shoes under my bed whenever he wanted.”
or simply:
Miller met her future husband at Schwab’s Pharmacy in Hollywood, recognizing him from “War of the Satellites” (1958). She joked, “He could leave his shoes under my bed anytime.
In their retirement, they took pleasure in Latin dance and swing at Las Hadas in Northridge, and spent time voyaging globally on cruises when not inscribing autographs at fan events across the nation.
The documentary titled “That Guy Dick Miller” (2014) chronicles their story. Remarkably, its premiere coincided with her 73rd birthday. Prior to viewing the screening, she shared with the Asbury Park Press, “I was a fan of his before I even met him, so this feels like a dream come true.
Lainie is frequently characterized by friends and loved ones as fierce, fabulous, passionate, witty, and romantic. She consistently demonstrated immense determination and spirit to allow her husband to pursue his career as an actor – truly the epitome of a supportive partner behind the spotlight,” her family pointed out.
Among those who carry on are her cherished granddaughter, Autumn, and her dear friend; her valued grandson-in-law, Ceaser; and her loyal companion, Popeye. She was preceded in death by her brother, Sheldon, and Barbara Ann.
