As a long-time admirer of Kelly Macdonald‘s versatile acting prowess, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement as she joins the stellar cast of HBO’s upcoming series “Lanterns”. Her ability to breathe life into complex characters, whether it be the stoic Angela Darmody in “Boardwalk Empire” or the enigmatic Carla Jean Moss in “No Country for Old Men”, is truly remarkable.
Scottish actress Kelly Macdonald, recognized from her roles in ‘Boardwalk Empire’ and ‘No Country for Old Men’, is now part of the main cast in the highly anticipated HBO and DC Studios superhero crime show titled ‘Lanterns’.
Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre are the leads in a crime drama series, created by Chris Mundy (known for “Ozark”), Damon Lindelof (from “Watchmen” and “Lost”) and Tom King, who has won an Eisner Award for comic books. This talented team is responsible for producing and writing the show, with Mundy overseeing its direction as it’s planned to span eight episodes.
The series titled “Lanterns” is noted for its gritty, “True Detective”-esque atmosphere and centers around Hal Jordan (Chandler), a highly respected member of an interstellar police force called the Green Lanterns. He finds himself reluctantly training Stewart (Pierre), a fellow Green Lantern. As they go about their duties, these cosmic enforcers become embroiled in a sinister mystery with roots on Earth when they investigate a homicide in the Midwest United States.
McDonald will portray Sheriff Kerry, who, according to her character outline, is a tough-as-nails woman with an unwavering devotion towards her family and tight-knit town. Her resilience, forged by a challenging past that’s given her strength, helps her stay grounded as the community’s hidden truths start to emerge.
The first two episodes will be directed by James Hawes who will also executive produce.
Macdonald earned an Emmy nomination for her work on Boardwalk Empire, the period crime drama that aired on HBO from 2010 to 2014. In addition to No Country, her film work ranges from Trainspotting to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows – Part 2 to voicing the lead in Pixar’s Brave. She most recently starred opposite Damian Lewis in vampire movie The Radleys.
Macdonald is repped by CAA and Independent Talent Group.
