‘Lanterns’ Sets ‘Slow Horses’ Helmer James Hawes to Direct First Block of Episodes (Exclusive)

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for both comic book lore and gritty detective dramas, I find myself thoroughly excited by the news of James Hawes taking the helm for the first two episodes of HBO’s upcoming series, Lanterns. His extensive background in tense thrillers like Penny Dreadful, The Mist, and Black Mirror, not to mention his feature directorial debut with One Life, promises a visually stunning and emotionally gripping interpretation of this beloved DC property.

A director for the DC Studios and HBO’s much-ballyhooed series Lanterns has been found.

James Hawes, a well-known television director, who previously directed several episodes of the spy series “Slow Horses” featuring Gary Oldman, has been selected to direct the initial two episodes of the upcoming sci-fi police show.

In a gritty, “True Detective”-like atmosphere, the series “Lanterns” spotlights Hal Jordan, a highly respected member of the Green Lantern Corps, who finds himself reluctantly training the up-and-coming Green Lantern, John Stewart. As these interstellar law enforcers, they become embroiled in a sinister mystery rooted on Earth, while investigating a murder in the heartland of America.

The production is currently in the process of selecting its main characters, with Kyle Chandler confirmed to play the iconic role of Lantern Jordan. HBO and DC are considering Rebel Ridge actor Aaron Pierre and The Piano Lesson actor Stephan James for the role of Stewart. Reports indicate that both actors participated in screen tests on Thursday, with additional tests scheduled for Friday.

The series titled “Lanterns” has received a direct order for episodes from HBO, and it boasts some highly esteemed creators behind it. Chris Mundy (“Ozark”), Damon Lindelof (“Watchmen”, “Lost”), and Eisner Award-winning comic book writer Tom King are serving as executive producers and writers for the show, with Mundy taking on the role of showrunner. The planned eight-episode season will also see the addition of Hawes as an executive producer.

Hawes, a renowned director from the UK, has an impressive portfolio of suspenseful dramas to his credit. He’s contributed to various projects including Showtime’s gritty ‘Penny Dreadful’, Spike TV’s chilling ‘The Mist’, the serial killer series ‘The Alienist’, AMC’s science-fiction thriller ‘Snowpiercer’, and the anthology series ‘Black Mirror’, among others.

Last year, he stepped into his first role as a feature film director with the movie “One Life“, which is based on the real-life story of Sir Nicholas “Nicky” Winton. In this production, Anthony Hopkins portrayed the British hero who managed to rescue hundreds of children during World War Two.

He is repped by CAA, UK’s 42, and Johnson Shapiro.
