Actress Poorna Jagannathan shares that the script for the upcoming DCU series “Lanterns” stands out as the finest science fiction screenplay she’s encountered in her career. Jagannathan was announced to join the eight-episode Green Lantern show, initially reported in November 2024, which is being compared to True Detective. In this production, Jagannathan will play the recurring character Zoe, and according to her recent statements at the Sundance Film Festival (via Collider), filming is slated to begin before the end of January.
I’ve just read a script that left me in awe, making me understand why there’s an NDA [non-disclosure agreement]. It’s absolutely mind-blowing, the best writing I’ve ever encountered. Admittedly, I’m not well-versed in sci-fi, but this script has transformed it into something familiar and accessible to me. Despite my lack of knowledge about this world, I found myself fully comprehending it. In short, it’s the best sci-fi script I’ve ever read. We begin shooting on Tuesday [Jan. 28], starting with camera testing.
In simpler terms, James Gunn, one of the heads at DC Studios, initially revealed “Lanterns” as part of the DC Universe’s initial chapter called “Chapter 1 – Gods and Monsters.” During the promotion for this lineup of DCU films and shows, Gunn hinted that “Lanterns” would feature not just John Stewart and Hal Jordan, but also other Lantern characters. It’s possible that Jagannathan could be playing the beloved Green Lantern character Jessica Cruz from the comics, and Jo Mullein could potentially appear as well.
Sector 2814 Will Need Every Available Green Lantern to Combat Sinestro
Among the captivating projects set in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU, none may be more intriguing than “Lanterns.” Given the comics as a guide, Earth’s Sector 2814 seems to require every Green Lantern Corps member it can get, given that the cunning, charismatic Sinestro has been confirmed as a series antagonist wielding a yellow power ring. As reported by Deadline on January 24th, Ulrich Thomsen was cast in the role of Sinestro, who is described as “ruthless yet undeniably charming.
Originally, Sinestro was introduced in issue 7 of Green Lantern (1961). This character, hailing from Korugar, stands out as the most captivating villain among the Green Lanterns due to his complex relationship with Earth’s renowned Green Lantern, Hal Jordan. In the storyline, Sinestro served as Jordan’s mentor after he inherited the power ring of the dying Green Lantern, Abin Sur, to step into his role within the Corps. Sinestro’s rebellious streak, aspirations, and thirst for power ultimately led him to renounce his green power ring in favor of a yellow one, which was bestowed upon him by the Weaponers of Qward.
For individuals unfamiliar with power rings, it’s essential to know that the Emerald Knights’ energy source has a primary vulnerability: yellow. This makes the already formidable villain Sinestro even more threatening. Therefore, casting Poorna Jagannathan as Jessica Cruz would be advantageous for the series, especially considering that Cruz herself had a yellow power ring while working alongside the Sinestro Corps at one point.
HBO’s “Lanterns” hasn’t been given an official launch date as of now, but it’s anticipated to debut around 2026. This release timing aligns with the theatrical premiere of “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.” Kyle Chandler takes on the role of Hal Jordan, while Aaron Pierre assumes the part of John Stewart, the Green Lantern Corps’ newest recruit. Garret Dillahunt and Kelly Macdonald are also part of the cast.
