Larian CEO Says Baldur’s Gate 4 Was “Playable” At One Point Before It Got Scrapped

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Larian Studios’ announcement has left me both exhilarated and disheartened at the same time. The success of Baldur’s Gate 3 this year has been nothing short of spectacular, and it’s only natural for us players to crave more from this beloved franchise.

Story Highlights

  • Larian Studios is the proud maker of Baldur’s Gate 3, which has turned out to be 2023’s Game of the Year.
  • The CEO of Larian, Swen Vincke, has confirmed in a new interview that the studio started making Baldur’s Gate 4 already.
  • However, due to the devs not wanting to repeat the same development cycle, the project was scrapped.

Given the excitement and impact that Baldur’s Gate 3 has made within the gaming industry, it’s only logical for us as players to yearn for more experiences from this franchise. Recognizing this desire, Larian Studios at one point contemplated and eventually began working on a sequel to further satisfy our cravings for the series.

When stepping out from your coding hideaway after spending countless hours on a project, you may find yourself susceptible to taking the straightforward path, such as creating an extension or standalone addition, or beginning work on a follow-up project, because it requires less effort. This is according to Swen Vincke, CEO of Larian Studios, in an interview with PC Gamer.

Fast-forward sometime later, the idea did not stick

As a dedicated fan, I’ve been thrilled with Larian Studios’ progress on Baldur’s Gate 3’s successor. They’ve managed to bring it to a somewhat playable stage, but it didn’t take long before the team began to ponder over its aspirations and envision where they wanted their work to be three years down the line.

As a gamer, I can confidently say that it was something we all would’ve appreciated, and I’m certain of it. Moreover, we managed to move quite swiftly due to the fact that the production machinery had just been used, keeping it warm. Already, there were playable contents available.

He added, “However, you gave it a try, and it’s acceptable, at least for now. But keep in mind, we might need to repeat this process about ten times. And are we prepared to go through this again for the following three years?”

Larian Is Done With The Baldur’s Gate IP

Although it’s disheartening, considering how incredibly skilled and driven Larian Studios is, it’s not surprising that they won’t be working on another Baldur’s Gate game. As a fan, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment, but Swen himself confirmed earlier this year that they won’t be creating Baldur’s Gate 4 as everyone had anticipated. Instead, they are embarking on a new journey, and from what I’ve gathered, it promises to be their most remarkable creation yet.

My warmest wishes go out to the fantastic team at Larian Studios, who brought Baldur’s Gate 3 to life – an extraordinary role-playing game that may well be remembered as a classic in gaming history. The experts at eXputer awarded it a perfect 5/5 score in their review, commending its captivating storyline, immersive combat sequences, and impressive character customization options.
