Law And Order Finally Introduced New Amsterdam's Ryan Eggold As Riley's Brother, But Katee Sackhoff Was A Fun Surprise

As a seasoned gamer of both the small and big screen, I must confess that the latest episode of Law & Order Season 24, titled “Big Brother,” was a veritable treasure trove for this humble viewer. The introduction of Ryan Eggold as Riley’s brother Matt, and the unexpected appearance of none other than Katee Sackhoff, sent my excitement levels soaring higher than a Millennium Falcon in lightspeed!

Spoilers ahead for Episode 3 of Law & Order Season 24, called “Big Brother.”

Law & Order packed a lot into the first two episodes of the fall 2024 TV schedule, including introducing Maura Tierney as the new lieutenant and bringing Mariska Hargitay over from Law & Order: SVU for a crossover. The third episode of the season, called “Big Brother,” delivered something that I at least have been waiting for: New Amsterdam alum Ryan Eggold as Riley‘s brother Matt. Eggold’s casting was announced back in August; what I didn’t know was coming was a guest appearance from none other than Katee Sackhoff as well, and it was the best kind of surprise.

Although Katee Sackhoff is well-known for her work in science fiction, particularly Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica, Law & Order didn’t highlight her appearance as much as they did Ryan Eggold’s. This could be because she was portraying a defense attorney instead of a main character like Eggold as Riley’s brother. Over-promoting her role might have seemed excessive. It was quite exciting, however, to notice her in the early scenes of the episode.

In the given episode, Ryan Eggold’s character and Katee Sackhoff’s characters found themselves working together, though Eggold’s role was significantly more crucial. Matt possessed evidence that could convict a criminal, but it seemed Sackhoff’s lawyer character was clashing with Nolan to prevent the conviction. In the end, Matt reconsidered his decision to testify, which might have posed challenges for Nolan in wrapping up the case.

He did ultimately get the guilty verdict, and Riley realized that he needed to hold his brother accountable after a conversation with Shaw that really showed off what Mehcad Brooks told us about the partners’ dynamic. If Matt ends up behind bars, I have to wonder if we’ll see him again in another Riley-centric episode. It was nice to see Ryan Eggold back on NBC, and his accent as Matt alone was proof that he can play characters who are very different from New Amsterdam‘s Dr. Max Goodwin.

It might be more engaging if Katee Sackhoff occasionally appeared as a guest star in the Law & Order universe. The series typically offers plenty of courtroom tension, with defense lawyers regularly facing off against weekly ADA opponents. Sackhoff’s occasional appearances could add an interesting twist to this dynamic.

Katee Sackhoff is widely recognized for her contributions to genre productions, spanning from live-action roles in shows like The Mandalorian, Battlestar Galactica, and The Flash, to voice acting in series such as Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Batman: The Long Halloween, and Watchmen: Chapter 1, where she voiced Silk Spectre. Additionally, she has the distinction of playing multiple characters within the Law & Order universe following an uncommon non-sci-fi appearance in Season 19 of Law & Order.

Will she return to Law & Order at some point? The series carries on in Season 24. Don’t forget to watch the trailer for the upcoming episode, which can be streamed with a Peacock subscription following its live broadcast.

On Thursdays, the latest episodes of “Law & Order” are aired at 8 p.m. ET on NBC, followed by new episodes of “Law & Order: SVU” during Season 26. Both shows, along with “Law & Order: Organized Crime,” can be streamed on Peacock. Initially, “Law & Order: Organized Crime” aired simultaneously with “L&O” and “SVU”, but it has since been moved to become an original on Peacock for its fifth season. Lastly, “Found,” starring Mark-Paul Gosselaar, airs at 10 p.m. ET every Thursday on NBC.
