As a dedicated fan of “Law & Order: SVU” for years, I can’t help but feel both thrilled and concerned as we approach the upcoming season. The recent casting news has brought new excitement to the table, with Kevin Kane’s promotion to series regular and Juliana Aidén Martinez joining the cast as a new detective. However, the inconsistent treatment of female characters in the unit beyond Mariska Hargitay’s Olivia Benson leaves me pondering what’s next for the show.
Following the announcement that “Law & Order: SVU” will debut later in 2024 with a new slate of cast updates, fans are excitedly anticipating fresh developments. One actor has earned the long-desired promotion to series regular, while a former “Griselda” star joins the team. However, this latest casting leaves me pondering: what’s happening with the female characters on “SVU”? (Besides Mariska Hargitay.)
Kevin Kane Promoted To Series Regular
Kevin Kane began working with the “SVU” team in Season 24 during the BX9 gang three-episode arc as Detective Bruno from the Bronx unit. Later, he transferred to Manhattan’s SVU to collaborate with Benson, Fin, and others. Although he frequently appeared in Seasons 24 and 25, his name was not yet included in the opening credits by the finale, despite his regular presence.
As a devoted fan of “SVU,” I’m thrilled to pieces about the news that Kevin Kane will join the cast as a series regular come Season 26. Ever since his debut as Bruno back in 2023, I’ve been hooked on his engaging chemistry with Fin. Having him around permanently starting this fall is music to my ears! Bring on more scenes of their banter and camaraderie!
Pondering over the arrival of Kane’s two additional co-stars during his first year, along with other casting updates prior to Season 26, makes me reflect on a less stable storyline in recent SVU seasons: the female officers in Benson’s team, without any hint that the main actresses from Season 25 aside from Mariska Hargitay will return.
What’s Up With The Women Of SVU?
As a big fan of both Griselda and Law & Order: SVU, I’m absolutely thrilled about the news that Juliana Aidén Martinez is joining the cast for the 26th season! With her impressive acting skills showcased in Netflix’s Griselda alongside Sofia Vergara, I can only imagine the depth and complexity she will bring to the SVU detective role.
The anticipation for SVU’s upcoming season is even greater due to the inconsistency in portraying female characters apart from Olivia Benson lately. For instance, Kelli Giddish’s departure as Amanda Rollins marked a significant shift, with her occasional returns not leading to a permanent replacement. Consequently, my optimism lies with Martinez joining the team for Season 26 to fill this void.
In the finale of Season 24, regular cast member Molly Burnett (Detective Muncy) was unexpectedly written off the show after only one season. Jasmine Batchelor’s character Churlish was also not asked back for Season 25. Initially, it appeared that Amber Skye Noyes’ Detective Parrish would have a significant storyline in the early episodes of Season 25, but this did not materialize.
After working in IAB and bending the rules, Benson welcomed Captain Curry (Aimé Donna Kelly) to Special Victims Unit. She also recruited FBI Agent Shannah Sykes (Jordana Spiro). I was thrilled to see more women joining our team, so I put aside my skepticism… until Giddish’s reappearance as Rollins brought back memories of what SVU had lost.
The reason I’ve been advocating for SVU to have more female officers since Muncy left in spring 2023 is because this show primarily focuses on crimes against women and children. As the captain, Benson isn’t always present at crime scenes for victims to confide in her directly. Having another woman in the team alongside Fin, Velasco, and Bruno would make it more believable for me.
It’s possible that Juliana Aidén Martinez will continue in her new role for Season 26 of “SVU,” which I’d be okay with. While it would be nice to have Kelli Giddish back as Rollins, introducing some new blood into a long-running show is beneficial, and I’m excited to see what the new actress adds to “SVU” based on her previous work in “Griselda.”
“Starting Thursday, October 3rd on NBC, Law & Order: SVU will air at its regular 9 p.m. ET time slot, right after Law & Order at 8 p.m. ET. However, the 10 p.m. ET slot will be taken up by Mark-Paul Gosselaar’s new show, Found. As a result, Law & Order: Organized Crime has been shifted to Peacock Premium for streaming instead. For those looking to catch up on earlier episodes of SVU, all 25 seasons are available to stream on Peacock.”
