As a long-time fanatic of Law & Order: SVU, I must say, the news about Kelli Giddish returning as Amanda Rollins in Season 26 has sent my heart racing faster than Mariska Hargitay’s iconic chase scenes! While her guest appearances won’t quite match the series regular or recurring status we crave, it’s a step in the right direction.
In the upcoming Season 26 of “Law & Order: SVU,” one actor has been promoted to series regular and a new character is joining the cast, but this doesn’t exclude the possibility of Kelli Giddish reprising her role as Amanda Rollins. As the show gears up for its return in the 2024 TV schedule, executive producers have hinted that there will indeed be more of Giddish in this season. Furthermore, they’ve mentioned that her new role within the NYPD aligns better with how her character was written out initially, making it a more logical fit.
Although Mariska Hargitay, known for her role on SVU, has not been a regular cast member since her character was departed in Season 24, she has made recurring appearances since then. In the upcoming Season 26, her role is expected to be more prominent. TVLine spoke with executive producers Julie Martin and David Graziano about what fans can anticipate, with Martin confirming that…
Without a doubt, Rollins will reappear on the series. Her role will be that of a guest star, and she’ll pop up frequently across various episodes during this season.
Although “frequent appearances” may not provide the same level of excitement for fans who have longed for Rollins, this news is still worthy of rejoicing. When her character last reappeared in Season 25, she was grappling with career uncertainty following her stint as an adjunct professor at Fordham which didn’t pan out, and seemed to be seriously contemplating a return to the NYPD after assisting on a Special Victims case.
Although Rollins didn’t rejoin Benson’s team for Season 26, SVU has a role tailored for her that appears to align better with her character. David Graziano hinted at this by suggesting she’ll collaborate with the NYPD’s Intelligence Unit, but it’s not the same Intelligence Unit as Chicago P.D.’s on NBC. The showrunner clarified this point:
As a gamer, I can tell you that the Intelligence Unit here is unlike any other, for the NY-based Intelligence Unit seems to have agents scattered across nearly every nation worldwide. Consequently, my character, Rollins, will be embarking on quite a few journeys as part of this global assignment.
In essence, the new job assignment for Rollins seems more reminiscent of what made Stabler depart New York (and part ways with Benson) for a decade, as portrayed in “Law & Order: Organized Crime”, rather than the typical activities of the Intelligence Unit depicted in “Chicago P.D.” I’m all for it, given that her past choice to leave Special Victims for a teaching position, despite lacking relevant experience, always appeared puzzling to me. This new development provides a plausible explanation for why Rollins might periodically be absent from our screens.
Instead of disappearing like Stabler when traveling and leaving people in the dark, Rollins, being confirmed as still happily married with three kids by SVU bosses, won’t do that. A significant change will occur where Carisi must handle parenting solo while Rollins is away, and this transition won’t be confined to off-screen events. Graziano hinted at this development.
In the upcoming events, Carisi and his daughter will find themselves entangled in a situation they must navigate together to eventually extricate themselves.
Is there anyone else who still finds it heartwarming that the Rollins sisters are called Carisi’s daughters? He was a paternal figure to Jesse and Billie even before he married their mother, making this familial reference even sweeter. I just hope that whatever romantic entanglements one of them might find themselves in during Season 26 won’t be too severe.
The upcoming guest appearances by Kelli Giddish in SVU suggest that the Rollisi family’s storyline is about to unfold, making fans eager for the series’ return.
