Law And Orders Adds ER Alum To Replace Camryn Manheim, And I Already Hope They Stick Around Long Term

As a long-time fan of both “Law & Order” and “ER,” I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia and excitement with the news that Maura Tierney is joining the cast of “Law & Order” in Season 24 as a new series regular. Having watched Tierney shine as nurse-turned-doctor Abby Lockhart on “ER” for nearly two decades, I’m thrilled to see her return to NBC Thursday nights and bring her unique acting talent to Dick Wolf’s nine-show TV universe.

As a dedicated gamer of Law & Order, I was taken aback when I heard that the Season 23 finale marked Camryn Manheim‘s last appearance as Lieutenant Kate Dixon. The episode didn’t provide much closure for her character, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed for something thrilling coming up in the fall of 2024. Why, you ask? Well, it turns out that a familiar face from my old favorite NBC show, ER, is joining the Law & Order family! Maura Tierney, who used to save lives on ER with her stethoscope, will now be donning a badge and delving into the criminal world of Dick Wolf’s nine-show universe. I can hardly wait for this exciting new addition!

Maura Tierney has been announced as a new series regular on “Law & Order” for Season 24. TVLine reveals that she will portray a new lieutenant in the show, replacing Camryn Manheim’s Kate Dixon. The casting follows previous changes where Mehcad Brooks and Reid Scott were brought in to replace Anthony Anderson and Jeffrey Donovan respectively. At present, no information is disclosed about her character.

Tierney has a long-standing connection to NBC Thursdays, starring as Abby Lockhart in ER for over a decade, appearing in approximately 200 episodes out of the show’s fifteen seasons. I used to adore her portrayal of Abby during my ER fandom days, and to this day, I primarily think of her acting work as being linked to that character. Between ER and now, she has taken on various TV roles, including in Law & Order, Rescue Me, The Good Wife, and most memorably, The Affair.

In the past, I wouldn’t worry about a new regular cast member on “Law & Order” causing an early departure, but given the show’s history since its 2022 revival, this concern is justified. For instance, Anthony Anderson returned for only one season before being replaced by Mehcad Brooks. Jeffrey Donovan departed between Seasons 22 and 23, with Reid Scott taking over as a new detective. Sam Waterston left just five episodes into Season 23, leading to Tony Goldwyn joining as the new DA. Most recently, Camryn Manheim announced her exit from the show.

If “Law & Order” continues past Season 24, I’m hoping Maura Tierney will remain a constant presence. It would be wonderful to have some “ER” alumni return to Thursday nights on NBC, and stability in the cast as the show nears its 25th season would be appreciated. With Mariska Hargitay leading “Law & Order: SVU” for over two decades and Chris Meloni heading up “Law & Order: Organized Crime,” I can’t help but hope for more longevity in the original “Law & Order.”

To rewatch the latest season of “Law & Order,” consider subscribing to Peacock Premium and streaming it there. For fans of Maura Tierney’s tenure on “ER,” Hulu offers access to all episodes of the medical drama with a subscription.
