As a passionate follower of fashion and its impact on society, I can’t help but admire Law Roach for his role in sparking change through his innovative work with Zendaya. The way he turned a seemingly simple style decision into a powerful political statement is nothing short of inspiring.
As a gamer, I can’t help but remember the moment when Zendaya rocked those stunning dreadlocks at the 2015 Academy Awards. It was a game-changer, breaking stereotypes and challenging beauty norms, something that still resonates with me today.
The celebrity fashion expert, who has been both a longtime client and intimate friend of the actress since her teenage years, recently shared insights at the Teen Vogue Summit regarding the outfit choice for the Oscars when Zendaya was 18. During this event, Fashion Police co-host Giuliana Rancic faced backlash for remarking that Zendaya’s appearance that night suggested she wore patchouli oil or marijuana.
During the panel discussion, Roach didn’t mention Rancic’s name specifically, but he did refer to some “very offensive remarks” from a well-known television personality that sparked significant discussions.
The stylist emphasized that fashion can serve as a means for expressing political opinions. They believe it’s essential for us to utilize clothing and style to convey our beliefs, whether they align with or contradict current political issues, as our voices hold the power to bring about change. A single instance of this was transformative; it ultimately led to a shift in societal acceptance of Black hairstyles in educational institutions and workplaces. Remarkably, this wasn’t our intention initially, but due to the circumstances, the Crown Act was born from that event.
The Crown Act, short for “Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair,” was established in 2019 to provide legal safeguards against discrimination based on hairstyles associated with race. This includes hair textures like braids, locs, twists, and knots, which are now included under the existing protection in workplaces and public schools.
Roach remarked, “We were simply going about it without realizing the outcome, but we’re thankful it unfolded this way because it sparked a worldwide discussion on what is acceptable for Black people, particularly Black women, regarding their hairstyles.
After Rancic’s comments, Zendaya responded by criticizing the former E! News host for making “ignorant and disrespectful” remarks. The actress from Euphoria also pointed out that suggesting an 18-year-old woman with dreadlocks must smell of patchouli oil or marijuana is a harmful stereotype and extremely offensive.
Later on E! News, Rancic expressed her apologies, stating, “This experience has been an enlightening one for me; I’ve gained a great deal of insight today. This incident has shown me the importance of being more mindful about cliches and stereotypes, as they can inflict significant harm. I understand now that it is our collective responsibility to avoid reinforcing them further.
At that moment, Zendaya expressed that it was “a good opportunity for both you and the network to learn something new.
