The author Lee Child, being an expert on how to vividly portray Jack Reacher, understands better than many the ideal screen adaptation. Though the author has consistently admired the character, he also acknowledges that no Hollywood legend could ever emulate the essence of Reacher in the role due to the most apparent reason.
Tom Cruise portrayed Jack Reacher on the silver screen in two films: “Jack Reacher” from 2012 and “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back” in 2016. These movies were financially successful, but they did receive their share of criticism, particularly regarding the lead actor’s physical stature compared to the description of Jack Reacher in the books – a towering 6’5″ and 250 pounds. Although Cruise is renowned for his impressive stunt work, it was challenging to overlook this discrepancy. However, despite Lee Child’s enduring respect for Cruise, he acknowledges that Ritchson, who plays the character in a current series on Prime Video, seems more suited to embodying Jack Reacher.
Speaking to The Independent ahead of Reacher’s return to Prime Video last week, Child explained:
As a devoted cinephile, I can’t help but express my admiration for the first film in the series. It was more than just a movie; it was a razor-sharp, gritty thriller that left me on the edge of my seat. Collaborating with Tom was an absolute joy and honor – he’s not only brilliant, but also an exceptional director with a unique flair for storytelling. However, one cannot deny the sheer magnitude of Reacher, a man who towers over everyone else.
Essentially, this character trait is integral to how he navigates life and how life responds to him. He’s massive, relentless, and intimidating, but compared to Reacher, Tom falls short in these aspects. The readers were disappointed due to this discrepancy, and I believe they were correct in their assessment.

Alan Ritchson Is Jack Reacher – Period
When Tom Cruise agreed to portray Reacher, author Lee Child expressed delight at last seeing his books come to life on the big screen, especially with a well-known Hollywood star. However, the casting choice did prompt Child to be asked repeatedly about the significant disparity between the mental picture fans had created of Reacher and Cruise’s on-screen depiction in the role.
In the case of Prime Video’s Reacher series, viewers haven’t raised any complaints about the casting of Alan Ritchson as Jack Reacher. From the moment he appeared on screen, Ritchson perfectly embodied the character, making it difficult for anyone reading a Reacher novel not to picture him. Essentially, Ritchson filled the giant boots, pants, and shirts of the wandering mountain of a man that is Jack Reacher in a manner that surpassed expectations.
The third season of “Reacher” is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video, receiving rave reviews from critics and an impressive 78% score from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes. With such a successful debut, it’s safe to say that “Reacher” will continue to be a staple on Prime Video for some time.
