One of the recent documentaries on Amazon Prime, titled “Lee Soo Man: The Mastermind Behind K-pop“, delves into the professional life of Korean entertainment mogul Lee Soo Man, who established SM Entertainment.
Over a number of years, this documentary tells part of the story of him while he was with the company he established, showcasing musicians from the record labels involved. Eventually, this leads to his less than amicable departure from SM and the creation of his own venture, A20 Entertainment.
Prior to the movie’s release a month ago, Lee assembled a group of attendees which included his fresh company’s girl band A20 May, as well as former and current talents from SM Entertainment like SHINee’s Taemin, Super Junior’s Choi Siwon, Girls Generation’s Tiffany, Sunny, and Hyoyeon. They all came together to watch the film.

Before the movie debuted last month, Lee brought together a mix of guests, among them his new firm’s girl group A20 May, plus past and present SM Entertainment artists such as SHINee’s Taemin, Super Junior’s Choi Siwon, Girls Generation’s Tiffany, Sunny, and Hyoyeon. They all gathered to catch a glimpse of the film.
Prior to the screening, Lee confided in The Hollywood Reporter that he had been approached about the film, met its director Ting Poo, and felt confident enough to take on the project. “I’m currently anxious to watch the movie,” he admitted, posing among the assembled artists for a red carpet photo.
As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I pondered over how people might respond when I was posed this question. To be honest, I’m not entirely certain about their reactions, but one thing is for sure: I need to watch the movie myself to find out!
As a gamer, just a few days before our big debut at the screening, my Chinese girl group from Lee’s new project had the incredible opportunity to perform at Wango Tango. We were a mix of being “nervous” and “excited,” feeling the thrill of playing at such a renowned U.S. festival. Following the film screening, we took the stage alongside our young trainees from A20.
But the cherry on top was getting to meet members of the legendary K-pop group Girls Generation! Growing up, their music was a significant part of my life, and meeting them felt like magic. It was truly an unforgettable experience that I’ll cherish forever.
In an interview with THR, Val Kilmer documentary director (named Poo in your text) discussed various aspects of the movie, including the controversy surrounding the use of funeral video from the late SHINee member Jonghyun’s funeral in the film’s trailer. Prior to working on this project, the director admitted she was not familiar with the K-pop world. When asked about the backlash, she acknowledged that she could comprehend why people were upset by the footage included in the trailer.
Poo explained that it was a sorrowful event for everyone involved, and the reason he wanted to incorporate [the video] in the trailer was not for any sensational or harmful purpose, but simply to show that the movie addresses both positive aspects as well as challenging themes. He hopes that once viewers watch the complete film, they’ll understand that we approached these sensitive issues with the appropriate gravity and seriousness.
