As a gamer who’s just stumbled upon the magical realm of Critical Role and Vox Machina, I can confidently say that my life has taken an unexpected turn for the better! The upcoming third season of “The Legends of Vox Machina” on Prime Video has me both ecstatic and slightly apprehensive, like a level boss you’ve been eager to defeat but are also a tad worried about.

The anticipation for the third season of “The Legends of Vox Machina” on TV in 2024 is reaching a boiling point, as the band of underdog heroes find themselves up against a colossal red dragon with numerous motives to eliminate them. After an extended absence, the Prime Video series will resume its run, leaving fans hungry for more than mere snippets and assumptions derived from the original content for months on end. However, the release of a complete Season 3 trailer has finally quenched some of that thirst, and I’m both thrilled by what’s shown and concerned about certain notable absences in some of the trailer’s most dramatic scenes.

Let’s break it down.

The Legends Of Vox Machina Season 3

To lay everything on the table, I only stumbled upon “The Legend of Vox Machina” a few months back, seeking an enchanting escape from my usual diet of crime shows and police procedurals for TopMob. Before encountering this series, I was completely unaware of Critical Role, and most of my understanding about Dungeons & Dragons stems primarily from watching “Stranger Things.” However, given that I’ve only recently delved into “Vox Machina,” the experience remains quite vivid for me.

In other words, I’ve caught a few snippets of the D&D campaign that inspired the show, but I’m unsure of what the source material predicts will happen next following Vox Machina’s victory over Umbrasyl, their encounter with Raishan in Whitestone, and the hint of Thordak’s plans revealed at the end of Season 2. In this age of social media and algorithms, my understanding is as limited as it gets.

Essentially, my analysis is purely conjecture, devoid of Season 3 spoilers, but hinting at potential concerns, given the latest trailer. If you haven’t seen it yet, here’s a glance:

Indeed, in the trailer, each of Vox Machina’s seven members – Vex, Vax, Percy, Keyleth, Grog, Pike, and Scanlan – make an appearance. While it’s not ideal that someone is missing completely, my worry isn’t as significant given this fact. Upon a second viewing, I noticed something unusual amidst the exciting visuals and the sweet moment between Keyleth and Vax kissing. It appears that when they travel to hell, not all team members will be joining them.

What’s Happening In Hell?

To begin with, it’s important to note that trailers are designed to pique interest without revealing all the storyline details or sequence of events. From the trailer, it can be inferred that five team members journey to a place resembling hell: Keyleth, Vax, Grog, Scanlan, and a visibly ill Pike. (Additionally, keep an eye out for what seems to be a cameo by Critical Role’s DM and renowned voice actor Matt Mercer at approximately the 28-second mark.)

As a devoted fan, it appears these five characters are about to encounter a formidable creature, one I’d recognize if my knowledge of D&D was more extensive. They seem to be settling into some unexpectedly luxurious seats, suggesting a tense moment before they likely suffer from the onslaught of other nightmarish beasts. The scenes, clearly set in the infernal regions, are filled with action, yet there’s an unsettling lack of Vex or Percy in sight.

In fact, no Vex or Percy.

So, Where Are Vex And Percy?

The good news is that there is a fair amount of both characters in the trailer, and most of their appearances in non-full group scenes are with each other. They also seem to be spending some time in more of an icy locale than the hell of the rest of their team. As a fan of Percy and Vex together from the first two seasons, I’m all for it… but it’s hard to just celebrate the pair hugging when something probably went seriously wrong right beforehand, for example. Am I supposed to just ignore Vex’s “No!” followed by what appears to be Grog as a pallbearer to a casket?

It seems to me that Vex might be surviving Season 3, considering how significant her death was in Season 2. However, this is by no means certain. With Ripley appearing briefly at the start of Season 3 and Percy and Vex not being particularly gifted in magic or healing, I’m concerned about what dangers they might face while the other five (including those with healing abilities) are in hell. This assumes that nothing has gone wrong for them before they were separated from the rest of the group!

It seems from a quick glance at the trailer that Percy, Vex, Lady Allura, and Kima may not be fighting demons alone. At approximately 1 minute and 15 seconds, they are seen running away from Vorugal’s ice beam together. Furthermore, around the 30-second mark, Scanlan is shown taking off a jacket in what appears to be Hell. This could imply that Percy, Allura, Kima, and Vex remained for Operation: Kill Vorugal, while the other five embarked on Mission: Hell.

As a gamer, it feels a tad unrealistic to purposefully divide our party when we’ve got an ice dragon to face off against. My hypothetical scenario might be slightly skewed. I mean, remember how hard we struggled with Umbrasyl when we were all seven, united in the battle?

Am I Totally Overthinking This?

As far as I can tell, “The Legend of Vox Machina” might contradict all my assumptions in the initial three episodes, and if I were to seek out spoilers from the original Critical Role campaign, I’m certain I would find some answers. At this stage, it’s enjoyable to speculate, and wouldn’t the series lose its edge if there wasn’t usually a sense of uncertainty? There are at least a few points I’m completely sure about: the music is going to be top-notch, the visuals appear impressive, and I can’t wait to understand more about that emotional moment between Percy and Vex (the hug).

Similar to the first two installments, Season 3 comprises twelve episodes that will be rolled out in batches of three. Starting on October 3rd (Thursday), fans with Amazon Prime Video memberships can enjoy the premiere episode. It remains uncertain whether The Legend of Vox Machina will eventually make it onto the list of top Prime Video series or best animated shows, but I’m excited to see what unfolds in this season… regardless if my predictions prove accurate or not.
