Growing up, Super Mario World was one of those games that left an indelible mark on me, with its pixelated visuals and iconic gameplay that transported me to a magical world filled with adventure.
At San Diego Comic-Con 2024, LEGO made an thrilling debut by unveiling the new LEGO Super Mario World: Mario & Yoshi set. This is the fifth installment in the adult-oriented LEGO Super Mario line, which was preceded by the Piranha Plant’s launch towards the end of 2023.
1) In a nod to their early beginnings, the latest collection showcases cherished characters like Mario and Yoshi. For the very first time, fans can observe Mario’s faithful sidekick, Yoshi, depicted in a charming 2D LEGO brick style. This new set pays homage to the timeless Super Mario World game, renowned for its retro pixel art and memorable gameplay mechanics.
Carl Merriam, LEGO Super Mario’s Senior Designer, revealed behind-the-scenes information about the development: “Our goal was to replicate the sprite animations from Super Mario World. We achieved this by designing LEGO brick versions of the pixel art and incorporating a function for Yoshi to follow Caped Mario while galloping along. Moreover, we added a dial that makes Yoshi’s tongue flick in and out, reminiscent of the gameplay experience.”
The constructed building is more than just an experience; it transforms into an eye-catching showpiece. It aligns with beloved models such as The Mighty Bowser and Piranha Plant in the “Adults Can Join In” line, created to evoke nostalgia for LEGO fans who were raised on Super Mario.
