LEGO’s first Mario Kart sets are racing into our lives

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and dread at the prospect of LEGO Mario Kart sets invading our homes in 2025. On one hand, the thought of recreating the thrill of Mario Kart races with LEGO bricks is tantalizing. The idea of assembling my very own Yoshi bike or Donkey Kong kart has me itching to save up my pennies.

LEGO is demonstrating once again that life can sometimes be both plastic and wonderful, as its upcoming gaming collaboration has now been unveiled. The world of video games and LEGO have always been closely intertwined, and while Mario-themed sets are familiar, it’s the more recent adaptations of other intellectual properties by the Danish toy maker that have caught our attention.

From Sonic the Hedgehog to Horizon, we’ve also got Fortnite and The Legend of Zelda to satisfy our urge to splash our cash on those plastic bricks. Now, an official Mario Kart set looks destined to race into our lives and bankrupt us all over again.

According to Jay’s Brick Blog, it appears the much-anticipated Mario Kart LEGO set is expected to launch on January 1, 2025, offering an excellent opportunity to splurge your holiday savings. Debuted at Gamescom, these six new LEGO Mario Kart sets feature beloved characters such as Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Toad, Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, and Baby Peach.

Following the playful teasing during March’s MAR10 Day festivities in March, we finally got a detailed glimpse of the new sets. As reported by Jay Ong, here is the rundown of the latest collections:

  • 72031 Super Mario™: Mario Kart™ – Yoshi Bike – US$14.99 / €14,99 / £12,99
  • 72032 Super Mario™: Mario Kart™ – Standard Kart – US$19.99 / €19,99 / £17,99
  • 72033 Super Mario™: Mario Kart™ – Donkey Kong & DK Jumbo – US$34.99 / €34,99 / £29,99
  • 72034 Super Mario™: Mario Kart™ – Baby Mario vs. Baby Luigi – US$29.99 / €29,99 / £24,99
  • 72035 Super Mario™: Mario Kart™ – Toad’s Garage – US$39.99 / €39,99/ / £34,99
  • 72036 Super Mario™: Mario Kart™ – Baby Peach & Grand Prix Set – US$79.99 / £69,99 / €79,99

In line with many contemporary LEGO kits, it’s been announced that you can enhance your Mario Kart sets by incorporating LEGO Mario, Luigi, and Peach characters (even though they aren’t provided). This will offer an interactive play experience. We learn that these figures will trigger Mario Kart sounds such as horn-honking and kart-drifting effects.

Apart from their primary function in the game, these characters can also help in scanning Item Boxes to gather extra coins that increase your overall score at the end of the race. Although it’s a bit disheartening not to receive a unique Mario Kart-themed Mario minifigure, the cute racing Toad is charming and will be proudly displayed on our shelves immediately.
