As a gamer, I find myself deeply inspired by the captivating journey of Calvin Courjon, the young automotive photographer who has mastered the art of blending breathtaking landscapes with the rarest vehicles on earth. His story resonates with me not just because we both share a passion for our respective fields, but also because it’s a testament to the power of pursuing dreams relentlessly.
Photographer Calvin Courjon, renowned for his automotive work with Porsche and other top car manufacturers, is collaborating with Leica Singapore for his debut solo exhibition. Together, they’re also conducting a workshop to guide aspiring photographers on refining their skills or transforming photography into a profitable venture. For insights into Courjon’s journey and the story behind this collaboration, TopMob interviewed the creative mind.
At only 25 years old, Courjon has established himself as a highly skilled photographer within the fields of automotive and travel. His unique style seamlessly combines stunning landscapes with exquisite cars, striving to produce visuals that embody the essence of speed, opulence, and the narratives hidden in the vehicles themselves.
His fascination with cars began at the age of 10 — initially, he used photography as a way to document the stunning vehicles he encountered on the streets like any other enthusiast. Over time, this hobby grew into a full-blown passion. By 14, he was chasing rides in the passenger seat. At 18, he was behind the wheel. And now, with his career firmly established, Courjon even owns the cars he once dreamt of photographing, including most recently a Porsche 911 997 GT3 RS.
As a photography enthusiast, I find myself captivated by more than just automobiles. Over time, my love for this craft has blossomed into a profound respect for its history and masters of the 20th century. The moment I delved deeper into the art’s lineage, my passion soared to new heights. Nowadays, instead of merely traveling for car shoots, I embark on journeys to immortalize people, cultures, and landscapes through my lens.
Significantly, Courjon’s transformation from an amateur to a professional photographer was a gradual process. At the age of 15, people started paying him for his photographs as a gesture of gratitude. By the time he turned 16, a client asked about his daily rate, marking the beginning of his career in photography. When he turned 18, Courjon officially established his business, using his earnings to travel, meet new people and expand his portfolio.
He expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I find joy in my work, and getting compensated just makes it even sweeter!” His dedication, spanning from building connections to consistently engaging on social media, significantly contributed to his achievements. For Courjon, cars are not merely pieces of rubber, metal, and machinery – they’re alive – a perception that ignites his fervor for the automotive world. “Cars hold a unique charm,” he notes. “When I’m around them, I feel at home.
The circle is completed in his affection for Leica cameras when Courjon mentions the brand’s rich history and superior quality as the reasons behind his attraction. His collaboration with Leica Singapore led to an exhibition named “Driving Places” which highlights the blend of remarkable cars and landscapes. Although the exhibition has ended, they are now providing a workshop with limited spots, designed to elevate the automotive photography skills of budding enthusiasts.
Individuals keen to participate are invited to register through Leica Singapore’s official webpage, as the workshop is scheduled for November 16th (Saturday). For those unable to attend, Courjon offers a helpful tip: nurture your passion intensely, as he states, “give it your all, because many won’t.” By developing your skills, expanding your network and remaining active, Courjon guarantees that success will eventually come your way.
