When Martin Scorsese is deeply committed to bringing a film to life, he can demonstrate an almost saint-like perseverance. For instance, the movie director spent almost three decades creating his religious drama “Silence,” which premiered in 2016. Similarly, his proposed adaptation of Erik Larson’s 2004 book “Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic and Madness at the Fair That Changed America” has been through a long development process, often referred to as “development hell.” However, despite appearing stagnant for quite some time, this project is now back in production.
Reports indicate that the long-developed film about Dr. HH Holmes, a notorious con artist and murderer from the late 19th century Chicago, has secured a new production studio in the form of 20th Century, with Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio in negotiations for their roles. The movie will retell the chilling true story of this serial killer.
The creation of “Devil In The White City” traces back to 2010, marking the year when Leonardo DiCaprio took on the role as a producer by acquiring the rights to Erik Larson’s book. It seemed that this project would bring DiCaprio together with Martin Scorsese again after their successful partnership in “The Wolf Of Wall Street” in 2013. However, in 2019, there was a significant shift as the movie plans morphed into a TV series adaptation instead.
A while back, there were discussions revolving around Keanu Reeves possibly assuming the role of HH Holmes from Leonardo DiCaprio in the television adaptation of “Devil In The White City”. However, this plan didn’t materialize within a span of only 10 months.
Although it’s been 15 years in the making, the upcoming serial killer thriller doesn’t yet have a drafted script. Recently, Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese teamed up for the critically acclaimed film “Killers Of The Flower Moon,” which was one of the best films of 2023. If “Devil In The White City” gets produced before “Roosevelt” and “The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny, and Murder” (two other long-standing projects), it would mark their eighth collaboration as director and actor.
In the near future, moviegoers can expect Leonardo DiCaprio in Paul Thomas Anderson’s upcoming film, currently untitled and slated for release on August 8, 2025. If you’re keen to catch his latest masterpiece created with one of the most renowned directors ever, Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” it is accessible through an Apple TV+ subscription for streaming.
