As a comedy enthusiast with a soft spot for quirky, off-beat humor, I can confidently say that Let’s Start a Cult is right up my alley. Having spent countless hours immersed in comedic content, from the golden age of comedy albums to the latest stand-up specials on streaming platforms, I find myself drawn to the unique blend of absurdity and heart that this film promises.
“After being denied participation in his group’s long-anticipated ritual suicide, an annoying misfit joins forces with a false prophet from his past to reestablish their apocalyptic community. As they traverse the heartland of America, this contentious pair recruit a military aspirant, a mentally disturbed mother, and a secretive foreign hitchhiker into their cult… Will this band of outcasts achieve their divine purpose or come to appreciate life’s value instead?”
The movie titled “Let’s Start a Cult” is the creation of filmmaker Ben Kitnick, who collaborated with actors Stavros Halkias (known for his podcast Stavvy’s World) and Wes Haney (from Netflix’s The Characters: Tim Robinson) on its script. The movie also features Eric Rahill (FX’s The Bear), Katy Fullan (HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm), Daniel Simonsen (BBC’s House of Fools), with guest appearances by Joe Pera (Adult Swim’s Joe Pera Talks With You), Ethan Suplee (My Name is Earl), Tom Papa (Netflix’s Tom Papa: You’re Doing Great!), and professional wrestler Phil “CM Punk” Brooks.
A Big-Budget Comedy Mindset with Modern Indie Money
Kitnick expressed that the idea for the movie “Let’s Start a Cult” stemmed from a single, darkly humorous thought: what if a cult member was so socially awkward that even their fellow cult members found them annoying? The film’s success posed an interesting hypothetical: could it replicate the humor and style of big-budget comedies from the past while still fitting within the realm of modern independent cinema? In other words, “Let’s Start a Cult” is our response to both these questions.
“This movie is a lively, offbeat comedy that combines deep emotions with a wide range of humor, managing to be both contemporary and reminiscent of the past. The main characters in the film are seekers, trying to find solace from life’s worries by embracing a new belief system alongside kindred spirits. Making this film was an incredibly collaborative effort, much like the story it tells – a light-hearted yet profound tale. I hope you enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed creating it; some might even call it a ‘cult comedy’!”
You know you want to join this cult. Let’s Start a Cult hits theaters Oct. 25 from Dark Sky Films. In the meantime, check out Halkias’ Netflix special below:
