Levi’s Is Replicating Bob Dylan’s Customized 501 XX Jeans

As a dedicated fan who has spent countless hours poring over Bob Dylan’s discography and biographies, I must say that Levi’s collaboration for the upcoming film “A Complete Unknown” is nothing short of a masterstroke. The vintage 501 XX jeans, with their raw-edged triangular gusset sewn at the bottoms, are a testament to the meticulous attention to detail that Dylan himself would appreciate.

As a gaming enthusiast diving into the world of Bob Dylan, I’m thrilled to share that I had an exclusive part in the costume design for the upcoming biopic, “A Complete Unknown.

Costume designer Arianne Phillips collaborated intimately with a renowned vintage denim label for the movie starring Timothée Chalamet. This cooperation led to the unveiling of an exclusive collection, which was made available before the film’s premiere on December 18.

In this unique partnership, the classic 501 XX jeans serve as the focal point, showcasing a raw-edged triangular gusset sewn at the bottom, reminiscent of customizations made to Dylan’s original pair by his ex-girlfriend Suze Rotolo for a better fit with his boots. As reported by Business of Fashion, this detail is a faithful reproduction of those modifications. The jeans are accompanied by a replica of the singer’s D belt, along with a suede motorcycle jacket – all pieces that Timothée Chalamet wore on set, also available for purchase.

The concise three-item collection is offered at a premium price point with the jacket retailing for $1200 USD and the jeans retailing for $495 USD. While the pricing strategy may seem ambitious, a conscious choice in honor of the star’s legacy and the unconventional approach of its development.

Actually, the capsule is planned to be presented within Levi’s less widely recognized Haus of Strauss – an exclusive showroom for VIPs, which can be found in Los Angeles, London, Paris, Tokyo, and Mexico City.

As a gamer, I’d say instead of going the easy route and buying pre-made graphics, we decided to put in the extra effort to create something truly distinctive. According to Business of Fashion, Philips teamed up with Paul O’Neill, the design director of Levi’s Vintage Clothing, back in 2019. Together, they worked diligently to ensure the costumes in our upcoming film are historically accurate.

In a collaboration, O’Neill assisted Phillips in recognizing the distinctive outlines of Levi’s garments, specifically the Levi’s Super Slims, that Dylan started wearing post his time with the Beatles, in historical photographs. Subsequently, the joint costume team pitched the idea of this exclusive collection to Searchlight Pictures for official merchandising related to the movie.

Stay tuned for updates on a potential wider release of the Levi’s Bob Dylan collection.
