Lexus in Design 2024 and Exclusive Vessel Collection Brings Artistry to the Automotive Realm

As a design enthusiast with a passion for sustainability and innovation, I find the collaboration between Lexus and these talented artists truly captivating. Having spent many years immersed in the world of design, I have seen firsthand how technology and creativity can come together to create something extraordinary.

Since 1989, Lexus has consistently strengthened its premium brand with key aspects such as innovative materials, exceptional performance, customization, sustainability, and advanced technology in its product launches. Within just a few years, the company boldly entered the hybrid vehicle market and emerged as an innovator in forward-thinking automotive design.

Currently, Lexus is pushing boundaries by launching the Lexus LF-ZC (Lexus Future Zero Catalyst), a Battery Electric Vehicle concept car. This marks a significant step forward in innovation for the brand, highlighting their commitment towards sustainability. In tandem with Miami Art & Design Week, Lexus also revealed Liminal Cycles, an interactive, multi-sensory installation, and the Lexus in Design Capsule Collection. These creative endeavors offer a contemporary take on the Lexus philosophy.

Liminal Cycles took visitors through an interactive journey, inviting them into the creative world of Lexus where natural materials are the new frontier and personalized luxury design takes front and center. The installation, housed in Miami’s ICA Sculpture Garden, gave new life to the concepts of adaptability and responsive technology, which are integral to Software Defined Vehicles. Going beyond what’s expected, Lexus created an inviting landscape in which the elements of the LF-ZC could be perceived in a novel way — in a way that bridged the gap between the automotive and the artistic realms.

As a passionate admirer, I’m thrilled to share that I had the privilege of being part of an extraordinary project in partnership with Crafting Plastics, a forward-thinking studio based in Bratislava. The centerpiece of this installation was a stunning sculpture reminiscent of the LF-ZC, beautifully scaled down.

As a captivated spectator, I was taken aback by three satellite installations that seemed to resonate with my senses. A sculpture inspired by flora mirrored the design of the LF-ZC’s steering wheel, while another grand piece served as an imaginative reinterpretation of the LF-ZC’s headrest, enlarging its dimensions and functioning as comfortable lounge seating. The exhibition concluded with a mesmerizing lattice sculpture that swayed in response to wind, utilizing UV-reactive bioplastic material to sense variations in UV radiation.

In addition to the four-part setup, Lexus unveiled an exclusive line of 26 collectible design pieces, skillfully crafted by a team of five innovative artists. This collection complements Lexus’ dedication to showcasing the future of experiential design. The artists behind these unique items are Crafting Plastics, Germane Barnes, Michael Bennett from Studio Kër, Suchi Reddy, and Tara Sakhi of T SAKHI. Each artist created their own custom pieces that serve as either sensory candle holders or fragrance diffusers. The designs reflect each artist’s distinctive style, incorporating materials ranging from amber glass to gold leaf to recycled aluminum sourced from a Lexus hood.

Crafting Plastics’ Ephemerables line infuses a touch of customization into their standard practice of eco-friendly bioplastics. This brand focuses on shaping nature’s offerings into practical items, and this container exemplifies their commitment to sustainability.

As a passionate admirer, I’d like to highlight Germane Barnes, an architect and designer whose work is deeply rooted in paying tribute to the African diaspora. He skillfully weaves homage to classical African architecture into his creations. His remarkable series, The Beauty of Labor, presents intriguing ceramic vessels crafted from 3D-printed clay. These pieces reflect the shapes and forms he meticulously studies in his research, echoing the silhouettes that are integral to Africa’s architectural heritage.

Michael Bennett, a previous NFL player and Super Bowl winner, dons various roles. He also draws inspiration from African traditions, which significantly influences his artistic studio, Studio Kër. Bennett’s collection, named Synesthesia, originates from amber glass and emphasizes substance and expert craftsmanship. The intricacy of his pieces mirrors the careful attention to material quality that Lexus incorporates in its design philosophy.

Tara Sakhi, the creator of the innovative architecture and design studio T SAHKI, bases her work on waste reduction and reuse. She transforms these practices into unique textures, shapes, and forms. Her latest collection, titled ‘Memory’, innovatively uses recycled materials such as Venetian Murano glass, gold leaves, and aluminum from a genuine Lexus hood to craft five custom pieces.

In conclusion, designer, architect, and Reddymade Studio founder Suchi Reddy emphasized human interaction within her designs. Frequently delving into the intersection of neuroscience and the artistic world, she utilized this project as a platform for further investigation. The highlight of her collection is Bloom, an innovative tabletop centerpiece designed to showcase both flowers and scents. Crafted from intricately cut interlocking slit paper using advanced technology, Bloom consists of five vessels, versatile design pieces, and scent diffusers.

For each unique Lexus vessel, they’ve collaborated with the clean fragrance brand dilo to create an exclusive scent. This invigorating scent has top notes of blood orange and bergamot, with natural undertones of cedar, moss, amber, and fir. Dilo employs 100% US-grown soy wax and clean cotton wicks in their candles, mirroring Lexus’ commitment to sustainability. This scent is available as a limited edition candle and was released simultaneously with Liminal Cycles.

To commence the event, Lexus launched Lexus Art Series: A Dialogue on Art and Innovation, a collaboration with Whitewall, which organized discussions focusing on materiality and incorporating sustainability into high-end design. Liminal Cycles will be exhibited at the ICA Sculpture Garden until December 15th. Additionally, candles and specific containers from this collection can be bought online at HBX.com, with the earnings from all sales contributing to ICA Miami’s sustainable projects.
