Liam Gallagher Slams Saturday Night Live After 'Excruciating' Oasis Sketch

As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for British rock and roll history, I must say that Liam Gallagher’s reaction to Saturday Night Live‘s parody of his infamous sibling rivalry is both relatable and amusing. Having followed Oasis since their inception in the early 90s, I can attest to the fact that their unique blend of grit and swagger has left an indelible mark on the music scene.

Liam Gallagher, leader of the band Oasis, has criticized Saturday Night Live following an episode that satirized him and his older brother Noel Gallagher. The show’s cast members James Austin Johnson and Sarah Sherman mimicked their famous rivalry using wigs and sunglasses, as the duo is gearing up for a new musical chapter. When asked about the imitation by a fan on X, Liam Gallagher expressed his feelings about the skit in just one word.

Excruciating.

In the quick 3-minute scene, Johnson portrayed Noel and Sherman took on the role of Liam, engaging in a sparring match while addressing Colin Jost’s queries about their forthcoming reunion tour. Upon its release on social media, U.K. spectators expressed dissatisfaction with their attempts to mimic the brothers’ distinctive Mancunian accent. A post from @Milo_Edwards stated, “No video can prepare you for the accents you are about to hear,” while another user, @DKilmartin12118, commented, “They really let you down.” Gallagher responded, “I wouldn’t anticipate anything else from them,” before adding…

“Are they meant to be comedians.”

This past weekend, Ariana Grande served as host for the second time on Saturday Night Live, with Stevie Nicks appearing as the musical guest. In the “Weekend Update” segment, actors Johnson and Sherman portraying Liam and Noel Gallagher, shared some common preferences amidst their squabbles: they both enjoy SpongeBob SquarePants, prefer Donatello from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, favor I Am Legend as Will Smith’s best movie, agree that Tommy Pickles is the best Rugrat, and find Steve Brady to be their favorite Sex and the City boyfriend, while Mr. Big is deemed a “toxic legend.” You can watch the amusing sketch here.

Oasis Reunites for Global Tour After 19-Year Hiatus

Back in October 1997, Oasis made a musical appearance on Saturday Night Live (SNL), with late actor Matthew Perry as the host. A fan later asked Liam Gallagher about this experience during an interview on X radio, to which he responded, “To be honest, I can’t recall being part of it.” On social media, fans pointed out that their mockery on SNL highlights the band’s ongoing significance, more than three decades after they first formed in Manchester in 1991. In 2016, director Mat Whitecross traced their journey to international fame through the documentary Oasis: Supersonic. During an exclusive interview with MovieWeb, the filmmaker shared that at the time of its release:

[Liam] is remarkable in a way that few individuals I’ve encountered can express two seemingly opposite sentiments within a single statement, finding harmony in their truth. For instance, he might declare both intense dislike and deep affection for his brother in the same breath, or he could express modesty about himself and then proclaim himself among the greatest rock and rollers ever, all while remaining content with these paradoxes.

The initial encounter with Noel left me feeling somewhat apprehensive as I entered the room, for he was someone I greatly admired, much like yourself. It was one of those situations where I wasn’t quite sure what to anticipate. Thankfully, he had an instant knack for making you feel comfortable and was both humble and amusing.

In the ’90s, the quarrelsome relationship between the Gallagher brothers was infamous during their band tours, leading to an unexpected breakup in 2009. However, they made headlines again in August with the announcement of their first performances in 16 years and unveiled plans for a global tour set for 2025. This upcoming event will celebrate the 30th anniversary of Oasis’ second album “(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?”, which achieved worldwide sales of 22 million copies.
