As an ardent cinephile, I have to admit that Liam Neeson has become one of my all-time favorite action movie stars. His gripping performances and unique set of skills have made him a force to be reckoned with on the silver screen. The 2012 survival action thriller “The Grey” is a perfect example of his raw talent, showcasing not only his physical prowess but also delving into deeper themes like grief and humanity’s indomitable spirit.
Legendary actor Liam Neeson, winner of an Oscar, is widely recognized for his unique talent in high-octane films. Incidentally, one of his top performances in this genre can be watched without charge at the moment. Although many of Neeson’s action roles have him fighting faceless minions, the 2012 survival action thriller “The Grey” presents a different challenge: coping with sorrow and wolves.
Under the guidance of director Joe Carnahan, the film titled The Grey features Frank Grillo, Dermot Mulroney, Dallas Roberts, Joe Anderson, Nonso Anozie, and James Badge Dale, joining Liam Neeson in a compelling narrative. In this story, Neeson plays John Ottway, an accomplished marksman working at a secluded Alaskan oil rig. Overwhelmed by the loss of his wife and questioning life’s purpose, Ottway finds himself in a perilous situation after a plane crash leaves him stranded with a few others. The predicament worsens when a group of Canadian grey wolves starts pursuing them, adding another layer of danger to their already dire circumstances.
In its initial release, the movie titled The Grey garnered overwhelmingly favorable critiques, boasting an impressive 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Today, you can watch this gripping film for free thanks to a subscription add-on. Liam Neeson delivers an intensely rugged performance in this movie, which transcends the typical man-versus-wolf narrative by exploring themes like religion, philosophy, grief, and the indomitable human spirit’s persistence, even when faced with insurmountable odds. Moreover, the film features intense encounters between man and wolf, as well as powerful speeches delivered by Neeson in his distinctive growling yet captivating voice. These scenes are always engaging…though they sometimes end abruptly.
Liam Neeson Is Now Considered One of the Best Action Movie Stars
Although Liam Neeson suggested he might retire from action movies, he actually has several dynamic projects lined up. Next month, Neeson will star in the crime thriller “Absolution,” and a trailer for it was recently unveiled. In this movie, Neeson collaborates once more with director Hans Petter Moland from “Cold Pursuit.” The story revolves around an aging gangster trying to reconcile with his children and make amends for past errors. However, the criminal underworld is reluctant to let go of their control.
Additionally to the film Absolution, Liam Neeson has several more action-packed movies in development, such as Cold Storage, the upcoming sequel The Ice Road 2: Journey to the Heavens, and Mongoose. In this film, Neeson plays Ryan ‘Fang’ Flanagan, a war hero falsely accused of a crime who embarks on an incredible nationwide car chase broadcasted live, supported by his ex-Special Forces Army unit comrades and watched intently by the public rooting for his successful escape.
Stepping aside from his usual action roles momentarily, Liam Neeson will showcase his comedic talents. Known for his role in Taken, Neeson is gearing up to star in the upcoming revival of The Naked Gun, directed by Akiva Schaffer and scripted originally by Seth MacFarlane from Family Guy. In this reboot, Neeson will step into the shoes of Frank Drebin Jr., previously played by the late Leslie Nielsen, with a cast that includes Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, Kevin Durand, Danny Huston, Liza Koshy, Cody Rhodes, CCH Pounder, and Busta Rhymes. The revival of The Naked Gun is set for release by Paramount Pictures on July 18, 2025.
