For the past ten years, he has predominantly taken on intense action roles, one of which was the 2021 movie, “The Star-Crossed Heart“. Although it received mixed reviews and criticism four years ago, similar to many other Neeson films, the movie is currently receiving a warm welcome as it streams for free on “Netflix“.
The movie titled “The Marksman” unfolds on the boundary between Arizona and Mexico. In it, Liam Neeson portrays Jim Hanson, a former Marine who’s now a rancher grappling with financial difficulties and monotony. However, his tranquil existence is disrupted when he encounters a young boy named Miguel, who has crossed the Mexican border in search of safety from a menacing drug cartel. Director Robert Lorenz skillfully weaves a gritty narrative, filled with intense action, as the plot follows Jim’s mission to escort Miguel safely to Chicago, all while being relentlessly pursued by the cartel.
Audience members familiar with Liam Neeson’s memorable performance in “Taken” and some of his more recent films might anticipate that The Marksman will follow the traditional pattern of a “revenge-driven man on a quest to eliminate villains.” However, Neeson delivers an unusual twist to this role, portraying a character grappling with the weight of his past while striving to make righteous choices.
During its initial screening in theaters, The Marksman found it challenging to attract viewers due to ongoing Covid-19 restrictions. Nevertheless, the film was able to recoup its $23 million budget – a feat many other films released at the same time could not accomplish. Furthermore, the movie mirrored Liam Neeson’s previous works, earning only 38% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes but receiving an impressive 83% rating from audiences. This demonstrates yet again that Neeson understands what his audience desires and typically delivers accordingly.
Liam Neeson Has Been Dominating Streaming Platforms
As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but marvel at Liam Neeson’s enduring impact as an action hero, even as he acknowledges the twilight of his on-screen exploits. His films, like ageless classics, seem to leap effortlessly from one streaming platform to another, always landing with a resounding success. Despite the constant craving for fresh content among streamers, there’s a vast audience out there who cherish the familiarity of Neeson’s action-packed performances.
Lately, Liam Neeson’s action film titled “Honest Thief” has secured a Top 10 spot on streaming services twice within a month, which isn’t surprising given his films often change ownership. While some critics have bashed many of his recent movies as repetitive retellings, the fact remains that audiences can’t get enough, and that’s why he keeps making them.
In the near future, Liam Neeson will switch gears, diving into a unique brand of physical comedy as he steps into Leslie Nielsen’s shoes for the riotous action-comedy series “The Naked Gun“. Interestingly, Nielsen himself is currently enjoying a resurgence in popularity, with his spoof film “Wrongfully Accused” ranking high on Tubi at this very moment.
