Lilo & Stitch Dominates Box Office Again as Karate Kid Fails to Keep Up

Last weekend saw a significant surge in box office revenue for 2025, largely due to the appeal of movie-going during Memorial Day. Movies like Dean Fleischer Camp’s “Lilo & Stitch” and Christopher McQuarrie’s “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” attracted a crowd, keeping cinemas busy even seven days later.

To begin, the first two spots in the Top 10 remain unchanged in their positions. However, this weekend brought some intriguing fresh entries to the scene: “Karate Kid: Legends” by Jonathan Entwistle and “Bring Her Back,” directed by Danny and Michael Philippou, both premiered widely. For your perusal, I’ve included the initial Sunny numbers in the chart below, and we’ll discuss the details further after that.

Lilo & Stitch And Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning Fall In Sync In Their Second Weekends

Over the Memorial Day weekend in 2025, the films “Barbenheimer,” “Lilo & Stitch,” and “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” each had strong showings, making them a successful trio of releases. Though their audiences may share some common ground, they cater to distinct age groups primarily, which allowed both to secure spots among the Top 5 opening weekend box office earners for that year.

Today, I’m sharing some data: Both titles I’ve been following have experienced a decrease in their weekly box office earnings. As per The Numbers, the drop was approximately 57% from one weekend to the next.

In the case of “Lilo & Stitch”, this additional revenue is a testament to its already impressive success. The live-action Disney adaptation has generated an impressive $63 million within the last three days, boosting its domestic earnings to a staggering $280.1 million. With an initial budget of $100 million for marketing and promotion (as reported by Deadline), the movie is now in a strong financial position after only a few days since its release.

As a cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that the movie I’ve been raving about is making waves! Currently, it stands as the second highest-grossing blockbuster in the US and Canada for the year, trailing only Jared Hess’ “A Minecraft Movie.” With just $143 million left to go, it looks like “Lilo & Stitch” might soon claim the title of the biggest hit of 2025. We’re talking headlines by mid-June!

The success of the Disney movie continues to brighten as you consider its performance outside the U.S. In foreign territories, the film has already earned an impressive $330.7 million, boosting its total worldwide earnings to a staggering $610.8 million so far. It currently trails A Minecraft Movie ($947.1 million) in box office rankings, but analysts predict it will soon surpass that title.

In terms of “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning”, the discussion around it is distinct due to its substantial budget. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this Tom Cruise action movie required an estimated $400 million to produce, a significant figure that looms even as the film outperforms many other 2025 releases in terms of global box office performance. Interestingly, the film earned the fifth highest opening of the year with $64 million last weekend, but it’s worth noting that “Final Destination: Bloodlines”, directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein, was reportedly made for a fraction of the cost and managed to earn only $12.4 million less in its debut, despite having one-eighth of the budget.

The latest installment in the Mission: Impossible series, allegedly the final one, has earned an extra $27.3 million domestically since last Friday, bringing its total earnings to $122.6 million so far. Interestingly, this puts it ahead of Christopher McQuarrie’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One in terms of early box office performance. By the tenth day of its release, Dead Reckoning Part One had made $104.8 million, eventually reaching $172.6 million by the end of its run on the big screen, which ranked it sixth in the franchise’s earnings.

The movie, “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” is earning significant revenues internationally. So far, it has made $127 million outside the U.S. and Canada, adding up to a global total of $249.6 million. However, it still needs to accumulate more earnings to be recognized as a successful blockbuster… and there are several notable competitors scheduled for release in the upcoming weeks.

Karate Kid: Legends Has To Settle For Third Place As Last Week’s Big Releases Keep The Spotlight

As a follower of the box office scene, it was clear that the exceptional shows over Memorial Day were setting a high bar for newcomers. Consequently, Karate Kid: Legends, my recent watch featuring Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan, had a more subdued debut. In its initial three days, the coming-of-age/martial arts film didn’t quite ignite global passion, but its $21 million domestic opening is certainly satisfactory given its reported budget of $45 million.

Globally, the film known as “Karate Kid: Legends” has already earned $47 million, and its Chinese release is upcoming. If current trends continue, it seems unlikely that this movie will match the massive success of its 2010 predecessor, Harald Zwart’s “The Karate Kid,” featuring Jaden Smith, which grossed a staggering $351.8 million worldwide. However, it’s clear that there is still a strong fan base for this nearly 40-year-old franchise.

A24’s Bring Her Back Rides Extreme Buzz In Battle Against Summer Blockbusters

To conclude, I’d like to draw your attention to the upcoming horror movie “Bring Her Back,” from beloved indie distributor A24. Starring Sally Hawkins as the main actress, this film might not get as much buzz as IP-driven titles this season, but it’s been generating a lot of excitement lately as a potential terrifying masterpiece. This hype has led to its fifth place ranking in the domestic Top 10 over the past month.

The film Bring Her Back, despite being equally hyped, didn’t match the box office performance of Talk To Me when it debuted in July 2023, earning $7 million compared to $10.4 million for the latter. However, with a production budget reportedly at $20 million (according to Variety), this initial take of $7 million is still an acceptable beginning. Given that the film’s success was expected to rely on word-of-mouth, it will be interesting to monitor its performance in the upcoming weeks.
