Disney enthusiasts are now aware of the duration they’ll be spending at the cinemas enjoying the new release. The official running time for the highly anticipated live-action adaptation has been disclosed.
As a devoted cinephile, I’m excited to share that the runtime for the upcoming Disney live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch is 1 hour 48 minutes, which translates to 108 minutes. Compared to the brisk 85-minute runtime of the original animation, this new version will be approximately 25% longer. This implies that the live-action remake will likely include a blend of fresh content and reimagined scenes from the animated classic.
It’s not too unexpected that Disney has extended the runtime for its live-action adaptations, as seen in the cases of Beauty and the Beast (129 minutes vs. 84 minutes in 2017), Aladdin (128 minutes vs. 90 minutes in 2019), and The Little Mermaid (scheduled for 135 minutes versus 87 minutes in 2024). These examples demonstrate the studio’s tendency to expand upon the stories of their original animated works.
In the upcoming months, Lilo & Stitch will be the third live-action adaptation of a classic Disney animated film, following Mufasa: The Lion King in late 2024 and Snow White in early 2025. However, despite mixed critical reception for both movies, they proved to be commercial triumphs, earning over $722 million globally. Regrettably, it seems that Lilo & Stitch is on track to become one of the biggest box office disappointments this year.
Stitch Looks Set to Reign Supreme Over Memorial Day Weekend
In contrast to classics like Snow White and Mufasa, it is anticipated that the upcoming live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch will outshine them during the Memorial Day weekend. Directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Dean Fleischer Camp, Lilo & Stitch revolves around a lovable extraterrestrial named Experiment 626 who, having escaped from the United Galactic Federation, crash-lands on Hawaii and is mistaken for a dog before being adopted by Lilo. The movie’s plotline suggests that viewers will witness a fresh perspective of “the hilariously funny and heartwarming tale of a lonely Hawaiian girl and the runaway alien who helps heal her fractured family.
In the upcoming remake, some actors from the 2002 animated version will return, but Chris Sanders is the only one reprising his original role as Stitch. Joining him in new roles are Maia Kealoha, making her feature-length acting debut as Lilo Pelekai, and Sydney Elizebeth Agudong as Nani Pelekai. The cast also includes Courtney B. Vance as Cobra Bubbles, Kaipo Dudoit as David Kawena, Hannah Waddingham lending her voice to The Grand Councilwoman, while Zach Galifianakis and Billy Magnussen take on the beloved characters Dr. Jumba Jookiba and Pleakley respectively.
In the upcoming movie, the original voice actors from the initial animated film, Tia Carrere (Nani) and Jason Scott Lee (David), will reprise their roles in the remake. Tia will play Mrs. Kekoa, while Jason will portray a luau manager. Additionally, Amy Hill, who previously voiced Mrs. Hasagawa in the original animated series, has been cast as David’s grandmother, Tūtū, a character created exclusively for this new adaptation.
Lilo & Stitch hits theaters on May 23, 2025.
