Lily Collins on ‘Emily in Paris’ and Becoming More Comfortable in the Gray Area of Season 4

As a devoted viewer of Emily in Paris, I must say that this season has been nothing short of captivating! The way the show has delved deeper into the characters’ backstories and evolved them as individuals is truly commendable. Sylvie, for instance, has undergone a significant transformation, revealing her vulnerability amidst her strength and confidence. It’s refreshing to see such a layered portrayal of a character, one that showcases both their resilience and their humanity.

[This story contains spoilers from Emily in Paris season four, Part 1.]

In the fresh season of “Emily in Paris,” Lily Collins‘ character, Emily, experiences something new: She discovers a sense of ease amidst the unfamiliar.

In the final episode of season three, Camille (Camille Razat) ended her engagement with Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) due to his emotions towards Emily, while Alfie also split up with Emily for the same cause. The fourth season of the Emmy-nominated series by Darren Star, airing in two parts and currently streaming the first part, sets the stage for Emily and Gabriel to reunite.

At the start of season four, upon reuniting with her Greek beau, Sofia (Melia Kreiling), Camille grants her old flame and ex-fiancé permission to explore their relationship once more, despite the fact that her pregnancy adds a layer of complexity to their situation.

Over time, Emily has shown herself to be someone who finds it challenging when venturing beyond her comfort zone. Starting a romantic involvement with a person who’s expecting a child with his nearly-wed spouse definitely qualifies as stepping out of her usual realm. Yet, she chose to take the leap and give it a go.

“This season, she’s growing more at ease with navigating the gray area of life,” Collins explains to The Hollywood Reporter. “She’s welcoming new possibilities that come her way, and if the current moment offers her a chance to experiment with Gabriel, I believe she’s inclined to seize it and give it a shot.”

Rather than waiting until I’m absolutely sure Gabriel is meant for me, I choose to dive into the unknown. As the star mentions, it’s crucial to remember that life can pass us by when we’re so focused on a single path. In the following sections, Collins also discloses her strategies for juggling acting and producing in Emily in Paris, expresses her aspirations for a season five renewal, and hints at Emily’s upcoming Roman adventure.

At last, we saw Emily and Gabriel acting as a genuine couple. What makes you believe this is the perfect moment for them to delve into a romantic connection?

Currently, Emily finds herself more settled and secure in the city, her profession, and the connections she’s cultivated, whether they are friendships or deep romantic connections. Last season ended with the suspense of Gabriel revealing his feelings to Emily, and now Emily has come to trust him. They had a pivotal moment where they realized it was either now or never. However, the revelation of the baby situation caused a disruption. As long as Camille is comfortable with Emily and Gabriel pursuing a relationship, which Emily deeply respects, she’s ready to fully explore her feelings for him. The situation is undeniably complex, given Alfie’s presence. Once Emily decides to pursue a relationship with Gabriel, she must confront the consequences. I’m glad she’s finally making a decision. This new phase brings about growth in Emily, as she has to face the challenges that come with her choice. There’s a sense of maturity and vulnerability about Emily this season that feels fresh.

At the conclusion of Part 1, it was revealed that Camille wasn’t genuinely pregnant. This is quite unfortunate. Her anticipation for the baby was palpable. What are your thoughts on how this might affect Gabriel and Emily’s future?

We approach the characters and the show delicately and thoughtfully. Additionally, Emily’s situation adds another layer of complexity to the storyline, as she had anticipated resolving it but due to unforeseen circumstances, her plan is altered. Since the baby isn’t real yet, it affects how she moves forward. This opens up opportunities for constructive and challenging discussions. The way she discovers this information…it’s a tangled web. It’s quite intricate, leading us into new dialogues.

At the moment in this season, it appears that Alfie isn’t an option for Emily romantically. Could there possibly be a scenario where Emily picked Alfie instead of Gabriel? What do you think?

To put it simply, Emily has been quite fixed on options A and B, viewing things in stark contrasts. She tends to shy away from ambiguity, preferring answers rather than questions. However, this season seems to have pushed her out of her comfort zone, making her more adaptable to the uncertainties life throws at her. This newfound flexibility is reflected in her openness to various opportunities coming her way. If the current circumstances offer her a chance to explore things with Gabriel, she appears to be considering it more enthusiastically, perhaps thinking “Why not try it now?” Instead of focusing on a final decision, it seems she’s more about seizing the day and dealing with the uncertainty that comes with it, especially when it involves Gabriel. It’s less about reaching an ultimate goal and more about enjoying the journey and accepting the unknown.

Why do you believe it was crucial for Emily’s character in the series to step out of her comfort zone (black and white) at that particular stage of her life?

As Emily becomes more comfortable in Paris, she learns that it’s essential not to let the pursuit of stability blind her to the richness of life’s moments.

In addition to starring in the show, you also produce it. How do you balance the two?

It can be challenging for me since I’m always observant and attentive. While playing Emily, I often find myself involved in multiple roles – an actor, a producer, and a critic. I might jot down ten things during a scene, but my mind is primarily on Emily. Yet, it’s hard not to notice other details. My slightly organized side kicks in here. However, I’ve learned over time that finding the right balance is crucial – knowing when to wear all the hats and when to take one off, focusing on one thing at a time. After all, I am Emily, and I need to concentrate fully on her. Interestingly, Emily shares this trait of seeing the bigger picture, which helps me as a producer, and it’s not unlike my character to do so. This approach benefits Emily, who is also a producer in her own way.

Did you persist in maintaining the exact design of your masquerade ball outfit, even facing difficulties with the hat’s fit and vehicle issues, among other things? In what other ways did you contribute to the production process?

Indeed, it resonated with me instantly when I saw that particular scene. I immediately felt that Harris Reed should be the one to design it. I rushed to him, expressed my feelings, and simply asked, “Could you please create this? It’s perfect!” Upon receiving the sketches, I was astounded, and we went on to have a fitting where I read the scenes again. I thought, “We can’t rush through this process. We need to see it all come together. I want to wear different outfits at different times, and although the script says I get into the cab, I can’t do that with this hat, but I can’t imagine not wearing it.” Thus, I was firm about letting the designer’s vision guide the project, understanding that compromises are sometimes necessary in a production setting, but I was determined on this point.

In terms of production, there’s a remarkable level of collaboration and openness among all departments, not just my ideas but also those of other cast members. By now, we have a deep understanding of ourselves and our characters, which makes it exciting to witness everyone express their thoughts. It’s been an enjoyable experience to be involved in various aspects of the show throughout the years.

In this new season, Sylvie gives a more profound portrayal of the #MeToo movement, hinted at in the last one. What makes you believe it was crucial to delve into this topic?

It’s great to delve further into the various characters’ story arcs this season, adding depth to their personalities. For Sylvie, something from her past resurfaces, causing trouble in the present and forcing her to make a difficult choice. The show’s handling of this was admirable – it was both respectful and tasteful. Sylvie is such a powerful, confident character, yet this tough decision revealed a hidden side of her that showcases her emotion, vulnerability, and uncertainty, making her even more relatable and multi-dimensional. She isn’t the villain; she’s been through a lot, and Philippine can provide more insight into Sylvie as a complex character. I found it fascinating how we were able to display various aspects of a character through their experiences and the choices they make moving forward.

As a long-time fan of this show, I must say that this current season stands out as one that delves deeper into the ensemble than any other I have seen before. Having watched every season since its inception, I can confidently say that the way the characters are being developed and their interactions are more complex and engaging than ever. It feels like a fresh take on the series, and I’m excited to see where it goes from here.

Yeah. I appreciate that. Thank you.

As a gamer, I find it fascinating to observe the diverse cast of characters and their interactions, and how they contribute to the overall narrative. What’s your take on why this particular ensemble seems to gel so effectively within the show’s context?

I’m thrilled about our team! They are all exceptional in their roles, adding something truly distinctive to each character. The longer we work together, the more they feel empowered to express their ideas, which I wholeheartedly endorse. As a producer, I’m delighted to present narratives that don’t solely focus on Emily, as it’s crucial for viewers to get to know the rest of the cast on a deeper level. They are simply fantastic! Sometimes, during scenes, we can’t help but laugh uncontrollably because of each other. Yet, this camaraderie also brings out different aspects of our characters. Thus, I’m excited that the show has evolved into a collective narrative, while still allowing for standalone storylines to flourish.

Have you shared that your character hasn’t been renewed for season five as of now? For how long do you think you might continue playing Emily?

I absolutely adore playing the character Emily, and every season, I find myself rejuvenated by bringing her to life anew. She’s been a fantastic teacher in my life, offering me countless insights. This role has opened up so many unique experiences for me. The cast and crew are truly amazing, and I can’t wait to continue playing Emily. I hope we get to keep going with the show. If it brings joy and a sense of escape to viewers, then that’s the most wonderful gift – something I also greatly benefit from. So, I’m committed to this journey, and for now, I eagerly anticipate finding out if we get to carry on.

What else can you tease about what people can expect in Part 2?

Emily’s switching gears from work mode to vacation mode. Her phone is taking a break as she embarks on a mini Roman Holiday. We’re in for a bit of Christmas and winter vibes, which are extra enjoyable this time of year. This season promises more surprises, twists, turns, and emotional depth from Emily. It’s going to be dramatic, dynamic, and cinematic. I can’t wait for everyone to witness the second half!

In the fourth season of Emily in Paris, now available for streaming on Netflix, the first part has been released. The second part will be available starting September 12th. Be sure to check out The Hollywood Reporter’s interview with the series creator, Darren Star.
