As a seasoned gamer with a deep affection for musical theater and a soft spot for iconic films, I must admit I’m quite intrigued by this latest announcement from Lin-Manuel Miranda. The concept of reimagining “The Warriors” as a musical, especially with an all-female gang and Lauryn Hill lending her voice, is something that has me buzzing with anticipation.
On Wednesday, it was revealed that Lauryn Hill is among the main vocalists for the innovative album based on The Warriors, a joint project by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Eisa Davis.
Regarding if the upcoming concept album, starring Busta Rhymes, Rza, Ghostface Killah, Colman Domingo and others alongside an all-female ensemble, might be Lin-Manuel Miranda’s next Broadway production, he stated that it will hinge on public response.
As a gamer speaking here, I’m all set to unveil this game and gauge the reactions from you guys once it hits the market. Currently, we don’t have a director or any producers lined up yet for this project, but stay tuned for more updates!
The upcoming album, scheduled for release on October 18th, is based on the 1979 movie. It tells the story of a street gang journeying from the Bronx to Coney Island, clashing with other gangs along the way, and has been transformed into music.
In 2009, Miranda first encountered the concept following the completion of In the Heights, yet he doubted it would be suitable for a musical. However, in the years 2017-2018, after his role in Hamilton , he revisited the idea and was captivated when he discovered a fresh approach by transforming the primary group into an all-female gang and pondering their journey fighting to regain their position uptown. This gang is falsely accused of murdering the leader of another gang, Cyrus from the Gramercy Riffs.
On the album, Hill voices Cyrus of Gramercy Riffs, with the gang played by Kenita Miller as Cochise, Sasha Hutchings as Cowgirl, Phillipa Soo as Fox, Aneesa Folds as Cleon, Amber Gray as Ajaz, Gizel Jiménez as Rembrandt, Jasmine Cephas Jones as Swan and Julia Harriman as Mercy.
The composer behind tunes for ‘Moana’ and ‘Encanto’, acknowledges that adapting this particular story into music or a stage production remains challenging. A concept album will serve as a test to determine if it can be made viable, much like how it has been done successfully for other musicals such as ‘The Who’s Tommy’, ‘Waitress’, and ‘Hadestown’.
Each New York neighborhood will have its unique soundscape, as Miranda pointed out, expressing excitement about the composing process.
Miranda is also set to contribute songs for the upcoming release of “Mufasa: The Lion King” in December. The composer admitted he approached this project with a significant amount of apprehension, considering that the original film features five iconic songs penned by Elton John and Tim Rice and has significantly influenced our cultural landscape.
He was chosen to compose six songs for the upcoming movie, and expressed his desire to be involved when he learned that Barry Jenkins would be the director.
“That’s sort of like Greta Gerwig directing Barbie,” he said.
The influence of “The Lion King” on our culture has deepened further following the demise of James Earl Jones, the voice behind Mufasa, according to Miranda. Miranda isn’t certain if Jones got to see the final version, but Jenkins had previously discussed it with him.
“I know we had his blessing,” Miranda said of the film.
