The upcoming prequel series titled “Crystal Lake,” set on the infamous Friday the 13th, has been in development for quite some time. Originally commissioned by Peacock in 2022 with Bryan Fuller as its creator, the project was handed over to Brad Caleb Kane in August 2024, making him the new creator, showrunner, and writer. Notably, Linda Cardellini from the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been cast to play the young version of the hockey-masked murderer’s mother, Pamela Voorhees. This marks a significant development in the production after a lengthy period of little news.
Actress Eliza Dushku transitions from depicting the spouse (Laura Barton) of Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye, within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, to embodying the enigmatic parent of Camp Blood’s serial-killer’s son, Jason Voorhees. At this time, no specific details about the project have been disclosed, nor has an official release date been announced. Nevertheless, enthusiasts can look forward to the involvement of Victor Miller, the original screenwriter of the 1980 film Friday the 13th, as an executive producer on the Peacock and A24 series, together with Kane and other EPs Marc Toberoff, Robert M. Barsamian, Robert P. Barsamian, and Stuart Manashil. Miller and Robert M. Barsamian also hold rights to various elements of the horror franchise.
In a notable casting choice, Cardellini assumes the role once held by the iconic Betsy Palmer as she takes on the character of Pamela Voorhees. This role was famously depicted by Palmer in the 1980 classic “Friday the 13th,” where it was revealed that the seemingly benign Pamela, whose full name was not disclosed until “Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter” (1984), was actually the film’s antagonist. In a shocking plot twist for the horror genre, the apparently kind-hearted Pamela, who was previously the cook at Camp Crystal Lake, sought vengeance due to her son, Jason, having drowned in the lake years prior. The negligent counselors were her target because they failed to keep watch. Palmer returned to the role briefly at the end of “Friday the 13th Part 2” (1981), and now, the mantle of Mrs. Voorhees is passed on to Cardellini.
Mrs. Voorhees and ‘Crystal Lake’ Couldn’t Be in Better Hands
As a die-hard “Friday the 13th” enthusiast, I was thrilled to learn back in February that Linda Cardellini might be stepping into the role of Mrs. Voorhees for the upcoming prequel series, “Crystal Lake.” It’s hard to imagine a more fitting actress to continue the legendary portrayal started by Betsy Palmer. But what makes this Peacock and A24 project even more exciting is that it’s being penned by another devoted fan, Brad Caleb Kane, who’s also at the helm as showrunner. His enthusiasm was palpable when he shared:
My childhood memories are deeply tied to the era of horror films known as slasher flicks, and none have left a greater impact than Friday the 13th. I’m absolutely thrilled about the prospect of adding my own chapter to this legendary series, especially with brave collaborators like Peacock and A24 on board.
In simple terms, the debut of Crystal Lake is yet to come on Peacock, but devoted followers of Betsy Palmer’s Pamela Voorhees or those new to the franchise can watch director Sean S. Cunningham’s iconic Friday the 13th for free on Pluto TV anytime.
