As a film enthusiast with over four decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must say that I find myself both amused and intrigued by the current state of holiday movies on streaming platforms, particularly Netflix. Lindsay Lohan’s latest offering, “Our Little Secret,” is yet another example of a film that has divided critics but captivated audiences.
The actress, known for her role in “Freaky Friday”, is once again a Netflix favorite with her new Christmas movie, ““. Although it hasn’t garnered the best reviews among this year’s holiday releases, it has still managed to draw a large audience and become Netflix’s most-watched film over Thanksgiving weekend.
In “Our Little Secret,” Lindsay Lohan portrays Avery, a lady whose meticulously organized holiday scheme starts to fall apart when her former lover, Logan (Ian Harding), turns up unexpectedly at her partner’s family event. The movie offers its audience the typical blend of humor and romantic scenes, and for devoted fans of Lohan, there is an exciting reunion from “Mean Girls,” as Tim Meadows makes an appearance.
Similar to numerous Netflix films, “Our Little Secret” has attracted a large number of viewers, yet its critical acclaim is somewhat muted. Currently, it boasts a 42% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, as critics grapple with whether it’s just acceptable enough for a positive review or if it’s worthy of a negative one. Many have applauded Lohan, who continues her successful collaboration with the streaming service after her 2022 hit “Falling for Christmas.” However, the recurring criticisms of a formulaic, cliché-ridden plot don’t sit well with everyone. Conversely, audiences seem more forgiving, rating it higher at 66%.
This recent surge in viewers aligns with Lindsay Lohan’s past work with Netflix, suggesting there might be more holiday-themed content from her on the platform in the future, given her ongoing partnership. While not all of her Christmas-themed productions have been universally praised by critics (with “Falling for Christmas” scoring a modest 62%), it’s clear that audiences often seek out familiar, lighthearted entertainment during the holiday season – a niche where Netflix’s Christmas movies typically thrive.
Netflix is Fully Invested in Delivering Christmas Fayre
The recently released movie on Netflix for the festive season, “Our Little Secret”, has been a massive hit, joining other top-charting films. Notably, some of Netflix’s earlier Christmas romantic comedies like “The Princess Switch” and “The Noel Diaries” have resurfaced, but it’s the newcomers such as “Meet Me Next Christmas”, “Hot Frosty”, “The Merry Gentlemen” that have been taking over the Netflix global chart, with “Our Little Secret” being the latest addition.
There are obviously unwritten rules in the world of entertainment, and as sure as kids will be writing their elaborate and increasingly expensive wish lists, Netflix will continue to develop more warm, fuzzy movies for the holiday season as long as subscribers keep watching. But, of course, it is not just Netflix that is getting in on the market, as there are plenty of other streamers also giving audiences some cheery new movies. Apple TV+ has Danny DeVito and Andy McDowell in A Sudden Case of Christmas and the highly-rated The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, while on Prime Video the Farrelly Brothers team up with Jack Black for the devilish Dear Santa, and Disney+ is currently showing Ben Stiller’s Nutcrackers.
