Lionsgate Debuts Explosive ‘Ballerina’ Fight (and Keanu Reeves Scene) at CinemaCon

The John Wick universe is revving up again.

At the start of Lionsgate’s CinemaCon event on Tuesday, they showcased an extensive preview of the film ‘Ballerina’, directed by Len Wiseman and starring Ana de Armas. Later, both the director and actress stepped onto the stage at the Colosseum for a chat about their high-octane action movie. This film is a spin-off from the popular franchise that features Keanu Reeves as John Wick; snippets of this were displayed on the screen during the presentation.

Lionsgate started CinemaCon by showing us a long look at the upcoming ‘Ballerina’ movie, directed by Len Wiseman and starring Ana de Armas. Later, they brought both the director and actress up on stage to talk about their action-packed film. This movie is a spin-off from Keanu Reeves’ popular franchise where he plays John Wick, and some footage of this was shown during the presentation.

De Armas, who was once crowned CinemaCon’s Action Star of the Year, affirmed that this experience has been the most strenuous and demanding physical activity she has encountered. She mentioned her preparation for this role took about three to four months and encompassed training in weapons, action, and ballet. De Armas found the scenes requiring a blend of ballet agility and combat particularly inventive and enjoyable.”

Or even shorter:

“De Armas, CinemaCon’s former Action Star of the Year, confirmed this as the toughest, most physical challenge she’s faced. Preparing for it took 3-4 months, involving weapons, action, and ballet training. The mix of ballet flexibility and combat sequences were creatively fun.

Speaking for himself, Wiseman expressed his admiration for the series, particularly appreciating its cleverness and quick-witted action. He shared that when it comes to his contribution to such a tone, he enjoys surprising and misdirecting the audience with the action scenes. Using familiar action tropes, he likes to veer off course, creating unexpected twists that can leave viewers exclaiming, “Wow, I didn’t see that coming!” – The seasoned director.

Audience members at CinemaCon enthusiastically appreciated the footage presented, especially an action sequence filmed in a restaurant where de Armas’s character engages in a high-energy, brutal fight with an assassin. In another part of the movie, Wick presents an offer: “You can still depart. You have the option.” She queries him as to why he didn’t flee, and he replies, “I’m trying to find a way out.

The video was a trailer that premiered last September for a movie featuring Anjelica Huston, Gabriel Byrne, the late Lance Reddick, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Norman Reedus, and Ian McShane. The screenplay is penned by Shay Hatten and Derek Kolstad.

The film project has taken a lengthy journey to the big screen, having been filmed back in 2022, originally slated for a theater release in June 2024. However, Lionsgate postponed the premiere to June 6, 2025, in February. This additional time provided Chad Stahelski, known as the mastermind behind John Wick, with the opportunity to collaborate on enhancing the action alongside director Wiseman for fresh sequences.

Every year, an event called CinemaCon takes place, bringing together cinema owners and Hollywood studios. Previously known as the National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO), this organization has now rebranded itself as Cinema United, and it hosts this gathering in Las Vegas. This year’s event will take place from March 31 to April 3.
