As a seasoned gamer who’s seen countless cinematic universes unfold on the silver screen, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation at the news of Kamala Avila-Salmon’s new venture. Her journey from Facebook to Lionsgate, and now into the realm of independent film production, mirrors the progression of a character in an epic RPG, leveling up and taking on a new quest.
Following almost four years of service, the head of inclusion and diversity initiatives within Lionsgate’s film department has decided to leave this position and instead enter into a producing agreement with the studio
Kamala Avila-Salmon, who departed Facebook and took up the role of head of inclusive content at Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group last October, is now starting her own production company called Kas Kas Productions. As part of this transition, Avila-Salmon has secured a two-year, first-rights movie deal for feature films with Lionsgate
“Adam Fogelson, head of Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group, expressed his excitement about Kamala and his pride in supporting her filmmaking journey. When Kamala shared her ambition to create films with him, they began working on a project that would not only foster her artistic development but also utilize her unique talents to help us produce more commercially successful and culturally relevant films for Lionsgate – a mutually beneficial arrangement,” said Adam Fogelson
Following Avila-Salmon, Tayanna Todd is set to take over. She’s been stationed in Santa Monica at the studio for more than three years, handling various roles focused on inclusive content and business strategy. Previously, Todd served as a coordinator for original programming at Showtime, working on series like ‘Halo’ and ‘Ripley’. Additionally, she worked as an executive assistant at CBS
The Inclusive Content team played a significant role in creating one of the studio’s tools for promoting inclusivity, known as Story Spark. This resource is designed to aid writers, whether they work within Lionsgate or externally, by offering an interactive questionnaire that suggests methods and ideas to enhance accessibility within their scripts
Avila-Salmon expressed, “I am deeply appreciative too, Lionsgate for fostering our Inclusive Content team and backing our efforts throughout the past four years. Tayanna has been a crucial player in this work since its inception, and I couldn’t be more proud of her as she embarks on the next phase of the Inclusive Content team within the Motion Picture Group.”
