It appears that the much-anticipated musical movie, “Wicked,” has demonstrated yet again that it can generate significant box office success. On the other hand, it seems a long-awaited musical production, initially involving Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson, might have been abandoned following numerous changes in writers, directors, and cast members. This project, a remake of an earlier remake of a Roger Corman movie, has been in the pipeline for some time. However, as reported by the filmmaker, it seems this project is no longer moving forward and may have been terminated at its roots.

Discussions about a remake of “Little Shop of Horrors” were underway prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, with Scarlett Johansson, Taron Egerton, and Chris Evans potentially playing Seymour Krelborn. Seymour is the meek protagonist who battles against a powerful alien plant named Audrey II to save the world. Different adaptations show varying outcomes, sometimes with the plant triumphing, while other times the timid hero prevails. Unfortunately, it appears that this new adaptation has stalled, as according to Dante, there has been no progress on the project whatsoever. During WonderCon, Dante shared with The Direct that the film has made no headway.

The term you want is ‘stasis,’ not ‘status.’ At present, much like various aspects of our town, there seems to be no movement or activity, and we can only hope that this will eventually change. However, as things stand, it might not be the ideal moment for launching new projects.

Essentially, it’s been over five years since a new version of the “Little Shop of Horrors” movie was made, so this update isn’t too shocking. In truth, details about the project are scarce, and it’s unclear whether the film would have drawn more from the musical or the original film by Corman in its latest form.

‘Little Shop of Horrors’ Doesn’t Really Need a Remake

Movies utilizing practical effects often maintain their visual appeal over time, as demonstrated by films like “Little Shop of Horrors.” This longevity is why classic titles such as “Star Wars,” “Gremlins,” “Aliens,” and “Jurassic Park” continue to captivate audiences with the groundbreaking work of their innovative filmmakers.

Corman’s initial “Little Shop of Horrors,” famously recognized for Jack Nicholson’s brief yet memorable role, embodies the kind of movie one might anticipate from a director celebrated for his quirky, budget-friendly, yet imaginative and entertaining productions. The 1986 musical, directed by Frank Oz – a legend in the Muppet world – and featuring puppetry by the Jim Henson Company, brought to life a plant character from the film that is hard to surpass in terms of realism and vitality.

Amongst standout performances by Rick Moranis and Ellen Greene, and hilarious appearances by Steve Martin (who made many people dread dentist visits), Bill Murray, John Candy, James Belushi, and others, the character of Audrey II, voiced by Levy Stubbs III, continues to be as convincing on screen as it was nearly 40 years ago. In time, perhaps, the film’s hiatus is the world’s way of suggesting that just as we should ignore a lullaby when it comes from a hungry plant, so too should we disregard Hollywood’s recycling machine and its “Feed Me” tune.
