Liu Bolin’s camouflage art is similar to a magical illusion. By carefully blending himself with different environments, this artist, nicknamed “The Invisible Man,” confounds our understanding of visibility through his thought-provoking self-portraits. For the event of Singapore Art Week, Liu plans to execute his most significant project: converting a group of 100 people into an iconic landmark of Singapore, the Clifford Pier.
Under the joint coordination of DECK Photography Art Center and Liu’s namesake studio, the exhibition titled “Hiding in Singapore: The Journey Between” gathers 25 local artists. This event encourages participants to blend into the rich tapestry of Singapore’s cultural heritage as a tribute to the nation’s 60th anniversary.
In a recent announcement, DECK highlighted that this innovative project aims to bring together individuals across diverse backgrounds – from those who once navigated the harbor as boatmen to today’s young professionals – in a remarkable public exhibition of shared artistic expression.
The title of this project is inspired by Liu’s famous “Hiding in the City” collection, where he blended seamlessly into intricate cityscapes across China. This interactive installation continues Liu’s solo exhibition at the Singapore International Photography Festival last October, where he became one with the surroundings at Merlion Park and Chinatown Complex Hawker Centre.
