Live-Action ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Reactions Call It Magical and Unforgettable!

I had the privilege of attending a premier screening at CinemaCon for the live-action reimagining of the cherished animated series, “How to Train Your Dragon.” Directed, written, and produced by Dean DeBlois, the creator of the original trilogy, this upcoming adaptation features Mason Thames in the central role as Hiccup, a young Viking with a passion for dragons.

Initial responses on social media about the latest movie adaptation have been overwhelmingly positive, with many praising it as an excellent live-action remake. However, some viewers argue that it lacks the boldness found in original films, staying too faithful to the source material. On platform X, Jeremy Kazieva raved that this film was “the best live-action movie I’ve ever seen.” He explained that it was very similar to the animated version, but if you loved the original, you would adore this even more due to its outstanding music, acting, and CGI, which left him with goosebumps and tears. Conversely, Junior Felix expressed his admiration for the movie, stating that there were several awe-inspiring sequences that took his breath away, leaving him teary-eyed. He added that Mason Thames perfectly portrayed the character of Hiccup, making it an unmissable family film for the summer.

As a movie enthusiast, I must admit that while I enjoyed “How to Train Your Dragon,” I found myself wishing for more originality. Maggie, a fellow film lover, put it well when she said, “How to Train Your Dragon is an interesting watch, but it’s essentially a carbon copy of the original. There’s no risk-taking, just some nice moments, but I can’t help but wonder why this film needed to be made if it didn’t bring anything new or creative to the table.”

It seems that this movie was primarily crafted for those who appreciate a fresh take on an old favorite, yet prefer the story and characters to remain unchanged.

The remaining actors in this production are BAFTA nominee Nico Parker (known for Dumbo and The Last of Us), Nick Frost (famous for Snow White and the Huntsman and Shaun of the Dead), Julian Dennison (Deadpool 2), Gabriel Howell (Bodies), Bronwyn James (Wicked), Harry Trevaldwyn (Smothered), Ruth Codd (The Midnight Club), BAFTA nominee Peter Serafinowicz (Guardians of the Galaxy), Murray McArthur (Game of Thrones), and Gerard Butler (300, Den of Thieves) reprising his role as Stoick. The much-anticipated live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon will be released in theaters on June 13, 2025. For a glimpse into the story, here’s the official synopsis: [The live-action reimagining’s synopsis]

On the rugged island of Berk, long-time foes, Vikings and dragons, have been locked in enmity for generations. Amidst this strife stands Hiccup, the ingenious yet underappreciated son of Chief Stoick the Vast. Bucking centuries of tradition, he develops a friendship with Toothless, a notorious Night Fury dragon. This unconventional bond sheds light on the true character of dragons, shaking the very pillars of Viking society. With Astrid, a fierce and determined young woman, and the eccentric blacksmith Gobber at his side, Hiccup navigates a world divided by fear and misconception.

In times when an ancient peril looms, casting shadows over Vikings and dragons alike, my bond with Toothless assumes paramount importance. Hand in wingtip, we tread a precarious path toward harmony, transcending the barriers that separate our realms and reinventing the essence of heroism and leadership.

Gerard Butler Promises the Same “Magic” in the Live-Action Remake

The franchise based on Cressida Cowell’s popular book series, How to Train Your Dragon, has been a massive hit for the studio, garnering four Academy Award nominations and raking in over $1.6 billion at worldwide box offices. Star Gerard Butler hinted at the “magic” in this fresh approach, sharing insights exclusively with MovieWeb…

It’s been an absolute delight to contribute to these films, to share those tales, and witness their positive reception by the audience. Collaborating with Dean DeBlois, our exceptional director, along with this incredible team, was truly a dream come true. I entered this industry understanding that we’re crafting magical realms, emotions, and thoughts, hoping they would captivate people and offer them some solace in their lives.

Regardless of the reason, being involved will undoubtedly make it a timeless masterpiece. I’m simply grateful for the opportunity to take part in such an extraordinary event.
