Live-Action Masters of the Universe Casts Riverdale's Camila Mendes

As a long-time fan of Camila Mendes since her days as Veronica Lodge in Riverdale, I couldn’t be more excited to see her take on the role of Teela in Amazon Studios’ Masters of the Universe! Her versatile acting skills and rising stardom, as demonstrated in critically acclaimed projects like Palm Springs, Do Revenge, and her upcoming roles in Upgraded, Música, and the I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot, make her an ideal choice for this iconic character.

In the latest development for Amazon Studios and Mattel’s “Masters of the Universe,” there’s an exciting casting announcement. The film, directed by Travis Knight (who brought “Bumblebee” to life), has cast Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam/He-Man from “The Idea of You.” Now, another renowned actor is joining the team, taking on the role of Teela, a trusted ally, leader of Eternia’s Royal Guard, and a significant love interest for He-Man.

Actress Camila Mendes has been announced to portray Teela, as reported by Deadline. Mendes is most recognized for her performance as Veronica Lodge on the popular CW show Riverdale. Besides this, she has made notable appearances in the critically praised Hulu production Palm Springs and the Netflix dark comedy Do Revenge. In 2024, Mendes already has two major projects under her belt – starring and producing the romantic comedies Upgraded and Música. Her upcoming role will be in the reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summer.

As a devoted fan, I’ve witnessed the challenging journey of bringing Masters of the Universe to the silver screen. The property initially took form in 1987 as Masters of the Universe, with Dolph Lundgren portraying He-Man and Chelsea Field as Teela. Regrettably, this film was met with critical and box office failure, casting a long shadow over the franchise. The triumph of 2007’s Transformers, coupled with the resurgence of ’80s television series and toy lines on the big screen, stirred interest among studios such as Warner Bros., Columbia Pictures, and Netflix for a fresh take on Masters of the Universe. Over the years, directors like John M. Chu (Wicked), McG (Terminator: Salvation), and Aaron and Adam Nee (The Lost City) were attached to the project, but bringing this beloved story to life on the big screen remained an elusive goal.

In recent years, the He-Man franchise has experienced a resurgence, largely due to Netflix shows such as “She-Ra and the Princesses of Power” and Kevin Smith’s “Masters of the Universe: Revelations” and “Masters of the Universe: Revolution”. These projects have given more focus to the character of Teela and explored her past, which may influence how the upcoming “Masters of the Universe” movie portrays Teela, as well as why Mendes agreed to play the role. Sarah Michelle Gellar lent her voice to Teela in “Masters of the Universe: Revelations”, while Melissa Benoist, a former co-star of Mendes from her time on Supergirl, took over the role for “Masters of the Universe: Revolution”.

As a fan, I’m thrilled to see Amazon MGM putting their weight behind the upcoming film adaptation of Masters of the Universe. Director Travis Knight has demonstrated his knack for epic fantasy, as evident in Kubo and the Two Strings, and he’s shown that he can breathe new life into an ’80s toy line with Bumblebee. With rising stars like Nicholas Galitzine and Camila Mendes on board, the film is bound to attract a younger audience who might not be familiar with Masters of the Universe but are drawn to these talented actors. The clever casting choices that worked wonders for Dune, featuring stars like Zendaya, Timothée Chalamet, Austin Butler, and Florence Pugh, seem to be a strategy Amazon MGM is employing here as well. Although Camila Mendes isn’t a producer on Masters of the Universe, her growing involvement in shaping her career suggests that she found something truly captivating about this project to join forces with it.

Masters of the Universe
