The renowned tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams, along with their half-sister Isha Price, are planning to oversee the production of a movie based on the book “The Match“, which tells the story of an unconventional athletic partnership between a Jewish woman and a Black woman at the 1956 Wimbledon tennis championship.
Screenwriter Liz Maccie, known for writing Stephen Chbosky’s comedy feature film Nonnas for Netflix, will transform Bruce Schoenfeld’s book The Match into a feature film. The project, spearheaded by 1Community, Access Entertainment and Four Daughters, intends to adapt the sports history account in Schoenfeld’s book titled The Match: Althea Gibson & Angela Buxton: How Two Outsiders – One Black, the Other Jewish – Forged a Friendship and Made Sports History.
Althea Gibson and Angela Buxton, both trailblazers in their own rights, were a Black woman and a Jewish woman respectively. In the year 1956, they braved the prejudice of the time in the UK and made a significant impact on the world of professional tennis by claiming the ladies’ doubles title at Wimbledon. Gibson eventually triumphed in the ladies’ singles competition at Wimbledon in 1957, while also forging a bond with Buxton that lasted a lifetime.
In the upcoming movie, Macchie reunites with the crew of 1Community, known for their work on “Nonnas.” The initiative was initially conceived by the team of Four Daughters, consisting of Richard Stern, Navid McIlhargey, and Julie R. Snyder, who will be overseeing production.
Emily Blavatnik and Danny Cohen are set to create content for Access Entertainment, a company that developed and jointly funded the Academy Award-winning movie “Conclave”. Scott Budnick and Ameet Shukla will produce for 1Community, while Saúl Delcompare will supervise the project.
The Williams sisters, along with Price, will serve as executive producers for the adaptation of “The Match”. Caroline Currier is in charge of this project for Serena Williams’ production company, Nine Two Six Productions.
