Lizzy Caplan Has Revealed More Gambit Movie Details, And Now I’m Even More Bummed We Never Got The Superhero Flick

The superhero genre remains a dominant presence within the entertainment industry, with several interconnected universes vying for box office dominance. Though the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), now available through Disney+ subscriptions, continues to thrive, the X-Men franchise under Fox concluded with “Dark Phoenix”. Regrettably, numerous films were cancelled following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, including Channing Tatum’s long-awaited Gambit movie. Actress Lizzy Caplan was also set to star in this project, and she recently shared details about the aborted film that leaves me yearning for its release.

Fans who’ve followed Marvel films sequentially may recall that the Gambit movie was stuck in a prolonged production limbo for many years before it ultimately didn’t move forward. Although Tatum eventually portrayed the character in Deadpool and Wolverine, Caplan shared with Business Insider insights into what his standalone film might have been like. She hinted at how near the movie came to being filmed, suggesting:

As we traveled along, our plan was to film it. It seems there was an initial start date. I’ve had discussions with Channing, and we explored various options. Initially, we had a director, but then we didn’t, however, I held numerous talks with Channing and the other producers. They proposed creating a 1930s-style romantic comedy with a screwball twist set in that era, which would have been quite entertaining.

Truthfully, my excitement for missing out on this is immense. It seems as though the Gambit film might have offered something fresh within the realm of superhero movies, particularly the X-Men series, had it been made. I can’t help but ponder over how captivating Channing Tatum and Lupita Nyong’o would have been in their roles if the project had come to life.

It seems clear that Caplan was excited to kick off the Gambit film production before it was scrapped. In the same conversation, she expressed her astonishment at the movie’s cancellation, given that a star like Tatum was involved. To quote her directly:

“It appeared that I was eager to begin work on the Gambit movie, but alas, it was canceled. What made it all the more surprising was having a big name like Tatum attached.

The concept was truly innovative. It’s surprising that it didn’t make it, considering how often such projects are green-lit. However, it was indeed dropped from production.

There’s some truth in what she said. Many movies never leave the production limbo, but the popularity of superhero films usually ensures that they reach the big screen. Unfortunately, it appears that _Gambit_ was canceled following Disney’s acquisition of Fox and the mutants finally being integrated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Fortunately, the actor from Magic Mike has been cast as Gambit in Deadpool 3, and his performance has resonated with fans. While Tatum’s accent caused quite a stir online, many seemed to appreciate his portrayal of the beloved X-Man character. There is hope among fans that he may reprise this role in a future Marvel film. Only time will tell what the studio has planned for the X-Men franchise as a whole.
