Lizzy Caplan Says Axed ‘Gambit’ Movie Was Supposed to Be “a ’30s Kind of Screwball Romantic Comedy”

Lizzy Caplan is opening up about the scrapped X-Men spinoff Gambit movie.

In a recent conversation with Business Insider, the actress from Party Down, who had been discussing a potential role alongside Channing Tatum, shared insights about the movie’s early stages of development before it was unfortunately canceled.

As a die-hard fan, I must say, the concept was utterly fascinating! It’s quite peculiar that it didn’t make it past the drawing board. Frankly, I would have thought these films were invincible, but this one took an unexpected turn.

Regarding the “Zero Day” project, the star went on to say, “We embarked on our journey, intending to film it. I believe there was a scheduled start date. I had discussions with Channing, and there were several variations… we had a director initially, but that didn’t last, however, I held numerous meetings with Channing and the other producers.

Initially slated for production after undergoing numerous changes in direction, the movie featured Channing Tatum as the character from New Orleans who possesses the unique ability to control kinetic energy. This mutant’s arsenal consists of a staff and a deck of playing cards. However, the project was ultimately shelved following the merger between Disney and Fox in 2019.

Caplan mentioned that they had planned to create a 1930s-style romantic comedy with a twist, similar to a screwball comedy, within that particular context, and it would have been quite entertaining,” Caplan added about the aborted project.

Despite not having a solo movie for Gambit, Tatum managed to play the superhero recently, appearing in last year’s film titled “Deadpool & Wolverine“, alongside stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman.

Earlier, the “Blink Twice” star had commended Reynolds on Instagram for letting him breathe life into the character Gambit, a role he feared was lost to him permanently.

[Tatum] expressed his gratitude towards Reynolds and Gambit, stating that he may never be able to repay the efforts they made for him. He’s unsure how he could possibly reciprocate such a significant impact on him following the movie’s release in theaters last summer. “I adore you, buddy,” he wrote, addressing Reynolds, and also praising director Shawn Levy as an exceptional creator. He believes that everything happens for a reason, and he’s incredibly grateful to be part of this film. In his opinion, it’s a masterpiece and pure delight. So excited, he was shouting in the theater. Let’s go!
