LL Cool J Brings Energy to VMAs Stage With Medley of His Classic Hits and New Songs

As a gamer with an extensive background in hip-hop culture, I must say that LL Cool J‘s VMA performance was nothing short of electrifying! Growing up in the ’80s and ’90s, his music was the soundtrack to my youth, and seeing him on that stage, surrounded by legends like Public Enemy, felt like a nostalgic dream come true. The energy was infectious, from the crowd rocking their Kangol hats in sync with “Headsprung” to the goat signs during “The G.O.A.T.” – it was a testament to LL’s enduring impact on hip-hop.

On Wednesday evening, LL Cool J took to the MTV VMAs stage for a performance of his timeless classics and fresh tracks, commemorating the 40th anniversary of Def Jam Records.

Toward the conclusion of the three-hour event, the rapper made his entrance, joining forces on stage with Public Enemy’s Flavor Flav and Chuck D – two contemporaries from LL Cool J’s early Def Jam days.

LL started the lively concert by performing “Headsprung,” as fans donned the rapper’s popular Kangol hats, all in red. The scene switched to show spectators brandishing signs shaped like goats, during LL’s rendition of “The G.O.A.T.” song. Then, Flavor Flav and Chuck D made their appearance on stage, joining LL for a live performance of their hit “Bring the Noise.

Next, he seamlessly transitioned into some of his popular tracks such as “Mama Said Knock You Out,” “Rock the Bells,” “Around the Way Girl,” and “Goin’ Back to Cali.” Additionally, he included his latest songs “Passion” and “Proclivities” in the mix. The set concluded with a rendition of “Doin’ It,” a number he originally performed at the VMAs back in 1996.

Busta Rhymes began the show, praising LL as his “idol” and a “pioneer in every sense.” He went on to say that LL is more than just a hip-hop trailblazer; he’s not only a founding father, an influential figure, and a guiding force. Rhymes also mentioned that LL was the first artist to release an album on Def Jam.

Right after LL Cool J dropped the video for his fresh track “Murdergram Deux” featuring Eminem, I took the stage at the 2024 VMAs. Kicking off the show, I performed a medley of “Houdini” and “Somebody Save Me.” It was quite a night!

On Friday, LL Cool J’s latest album titled “The Force” (short for Frequencies of Real Creative Energy) was released. Apart from Eminem, this album produced by Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest, also includes collaborations with artists such as Rhymes, Saweetie, Nas and Snoop Dogg.

Megan Thee Stallion served as the show’s host, broadcasting live from UBS Arena in New York City. Here is the complete roster of award recipients.
